This Is Gospel- Panic! At The Disco

This is gospel for the fallen ones
Locked away in permanent slumber
Assembling their philosophies
From pieces of broken memories

Oh, this is the beat of my heart, this is the beat of my heart [2x]
Their gnashing teeth and criminal tongues conspire against the odds
But they haven't seen the best of us yet

If you love me let me go
If you love me let me go
'Cause these words are knives and often leave scars
The fear of falling apart
And truth be told, I never was yours
The fear, the fear of falling apart

Oh, this is the beat of my heart, this is the beat of my heart [2x]

This is gospel for the vagabonds,
Ne'er-do-wells and insufferable bastards
Confessing their apostasies
Led away by imperfect impostors

Oh, this is the beat of my heart, this is the beat of my heart [2x]

Don't try to sleep through the end of the world
And bury me alive
'Cause I won't give up without a fight

If you love me let me go
If you love me let me go
'Cause these words are knives and often leave scars
The fear of falling apart
And truth be told, I never was yours
The fear, the fear of falling apart

Oh, the fear of falling apart
Oh, the fear, the fear of falling apart

[4x]
(Oh, this is the beat of my heart, this is the beat of my heart)
The fear of falling apart

                                                     MEANING OF SONG

"This Is Gospel" is about Spencer Smith's battle with addiction and alcoholism. The song has become a fan favorite and an anthem for those going through tough times.

Brendon has released a of the track that showcases its emotion.

In February 2014, Alternative Press uploaded a in which Brendon shows them how he played every instrument on the track and talks about the song's meaning.

Drug and alcohol addiction.

In on the band's website, Smith explained how he struggled with his addiction for over four years.

For the past 4 and a half years I've been battling addiction....Growing up I never used drugs or alcohol. I smoked weed and had my first drink in the same night when I was 19. I loved it, and from that point on I made sure to make up for all those years I had spent abstaining....I didn't know it then, but it would be the identical reaction to the way I felt while using that would later lead my drug use dominating my life.

This song was written from frontman Brendon Urie to drummer Spencer Smith, regarding his drug and alcohol addiction. :

I was really on edge and anxious about where the future of the band was going, the future of our friendship in general. With him and his health I was really scared of what was going to happen. When I wrote that song I was mad—mad at myself and mad at him. Like, 'Why can't i do something to fix this? What is wrong with me? What's wrong with you?'

This was a very personal song, and not necessarily something written for fans to relate to.

In , Urie explained how the melody for "The Gospel" (along with many of their other songs) originated from something he sang to his dog.

.....A lot of songs start from inside jokes we have. Or little melodies that we'll sing to our dog. One of the songs that we sang to our dog turned into a song on the last album. It was just so catchy.

When asked by Billboard which one it was, Urie replied with:

Melodically, "This is Gospel." Before I had anything written to it yet, it was about little pet names for my dog. And I was like, 'I actually like this melody, it's been stuck in my head for a week, so I might as well try to make it a real idea.'

Urie also about the song.

"This is Gospel" was a really interesting one as well because when I wrote that, I almost didn't show it to anybody, but I really like a lot of the lyrics. I like "assembling philosophies from pieces of broken memories," which I though was kind of a cool idea, where you only remember so much of your past, and then you build up who you are from those memories that you've created for yourself — but how true are they from what really happened and I just thought it was an interesting idea.
