Miles sat there staring at the door for a while after Lizzy had closed it. Her warmth and presence was quickly fading away, leaving him feeling chilled and completely alone. He drew in a long breath, the air smelling of farm animals, hay, and cotton candy. He sighed, pulled the colorful afghan tighter around his shoulders and began to page through his notebook. He picked out a clean, fresh page and began writing:

Hadn't given much thought to girls before,

They seldom crossed my mind,

But now I can't stand the thought,

Of leaving her behind.

So soft and sweet,

She came to me,

And lifted me up,

And now I see.

'Tho what I did,

Cannot be undone,

Perhaps the battle,

Can be won.

All is not hopeless,

All is not lost,

I'll atone for my sins,

No matter the cost.

Satisfied, Miles closed the notebook and settled down amongst the blankets. He reached over and clicked the solar lamp off. When he closed his eyes he drifted off to the most peaceful sleep he had had since he was taken into the doctor's hands.
