JUNE 19TH 2018

Colombia v Japan 1-2

I went into this game expecting a Japanese victory and I was delighted when they delivered.

Carlos Moreno was shown a straight up red card when he blocked Kagawa's shot with his arm. In the 3' Colombia was down a man, but they'll continue to troop on. In the 6' Kagawa put Japan ahead with a cool penalty, but Carlos Moreno leveled things up in the 39' through a free kick after Falcao won it by theatrically falling to the floor. But Japan prevailed to win the match in the 73' when Yuya Osako powered home a header.

TAKEAWAYS 🥡

* The red card was the fastest shown at a WC at 176 seconds since Jose Batista for Uruguay against Scotland in 1986 (54 seconds).

* Japan made history by becoming the first ever Asian side to defeat a South American opposition at the WC.

Poland v Senegal 1-2

What a sensational game for Aliou Cissé's Senegal!

In the 37' it appeared that Mane had given Senegal the opening goal, but it was eventually registered as an own goal by Thiago Cionek. Senegal went ahead in the 60' through M'Baye Niang and Poland will eventually get one back when Grzegorz Krychowiak put away a fantastic free kick.
