Yura looked around before stepping outside.
" Do you think it's safe, Kiyoshi?"" I...I don't know, but Yahiro said we needed to g-go back to Eumsong's place. She said she wants to t-talk to us." Kiyoshi was on the brink of a panic attack. Were they in trouble? Kiyoshi hadn't taken his book back, what could have possibly made Yahiro upset?
" I'm really scared...why did they l-let us go alone?" Yura looked at the sidewalk in front of her. The two had gone out to look for a very specific brand of ski masks...for no reason at all. Unfortunately, they could not find them. It was a thirty-minute walk to Eumsong's new apartment. Most of the way there was full of people, so they would probably be safe. The issue Yura was having was with her crippling social anxiety. What if she bumped into somebody? She could accidentally start an anarchy if she misused her quirk.
" We should c-call a taxi," Kiyoshi said, looking at how dark it was going to be. " I don't t-trust our judgment."
Yura nodded, before shakily pulling her phone from her pocket. It had a light pink case, with a little tablet pen attached to it. She typed in a few things before calling in a taxi. After giving their location, she politely hung up.
A few minutes later, a dark yellow taxi pulled up on the curb in front of them.
Kiyoshi hastily got in the taxi, buckling himself up. Yura was more tentative, before finally deciding to sit next to Kiyoshi.
" Good evening kids. Where are we headed?" The driver, an older man asked them.
" Um...t-the block across from Yahn Apartments!" Yura said, visibly nervous.
" Alright." He signaled and turned into the flow of traffic. Yura attempted to calm down her breathing.
" It's okay, Yura. We'll be fine!" Kiyoshi attempted to pat her shoulder, but the driver veered to the left. They had narrowly avoided hitting a van which had ran a stoplight.
" God damn kids, probably don't even have their drivers licenses." The man adjusted his mirror and spat.
Yura's eyes were as big as saucers. They were nearing Eum's apartment; it was on the outskirts of the main part of the city. It was pretty peaceful there, the school had picked it out for her and paid her rent in exchange for her keeping tabs on her classmates. The remaining ones, at least.
As they were nearing the turnoff, a black van that had been tailing them rammed into the back of the car.
" What the—?!" The old man lost control, and his head smacked against the wheel, knocking him out.
" Oh my god oh my god oh my god!!!" Yura began to panic. When the man fell, his body weight slumped against the accelerator. The car began to speed off, with no driver, and two terrified teenagers inside of it.
" Take the wheel!" Yura yelled at Kiyoshi.
" I can't drive!" Kiyoshi countered. They began to go faster and faster, with the van still on their tail.
" Oh no, oh no. It's probably one of those gangs! They're going to kill us. They want us deaaaaaaad!" Yura began to sob. " I never got to say goodbye, I never got to tell them—!"
From inside the apartment, Eumsong, Yahiro, Chihiro, and Miyako heard the sound of crashing and ran to their window.
" What the hell is wrong with that car—!" Yahiro winced as she saw it begin to flip.
" Yura! YURA!" Kiyoshi screamed through the pain he was feeling from being bounced around. He pointed at a building they were about to obliterate. People were shouting and running away.
Suddenly, there was the sound of two feet firmly placing themselves on the top of the car, stopping it from flipping. The previous flipping knocked the old man away from the accelerator, and he bounced around inside the car.
" We're dead, we're dead, we're deaaaaaaad!" Kiyoshi and Yura were hugging, whilst crying.
A hand punched through the window and grabbed the old man, tossing him out onto the pavement.
They were literally about thirty feet from the building. There was a groaning noise from the top of the car as they took out a small fruit cart. How the hell were they not slowing down?!
Kiyoshi thought about using his quirk, but that would endanger Yura. Lava in such a close space could be devastating. His heart was pounding, so he did what he knew he could do. Save Yura.
Kiyoshi unbuckled his seatbelt and curled himself in front of Yura, attempting to shield her from the oncoming impact.
" Kiyoshi!" Yura screamed, just before they hit.
The impact was catastrophic. The car hit head-on into the glass front of a building. It ripped apart the interior, smacking Kiyoshi forward and Yura's head into the back window.
Just as Yura and Kiyoshi were thrown out of the car, a glowing, pink, grappling-hook-like object managed to hook the back of Yura's shirt. The sheer strength of it was able to yank both of the teens out of the path of danger, falling safely into a dinged-up tub of melons.
Gooey fruit innards splattered everywhere as the kinetic energy of their landing was dispersed. The hook turned back to its black color and fell to the ground. Whoever had owned it discarded it as soon as they were safe.
The black van had disappeared as quickly as it came. Police officers, bystanders, and the remaining members of the kotatsu squad came running.
" Are you kids okay?! Was there anybody else in the car with you?!" A police officer asked, taping off the cart as the rest of his squadron taped off the scene.
Yura has a dazed look in her eyes, and Kiyoshi was knocked unconscious by the blow he had taken to the back.
" Driver..?" Yura cocked her head.
" He's with paramedics now. He should be fine." The police officer winced. Yura has suffered a concussion.
" YURA! KIYOSHI!" Eumsong came running up to them, tugging Chihiro with her. Yahiro and Miyako were behind her. All of their eyes were wide with worry and their limbs shaky with adrenaline.
" Please stay back, ladies." The police officer said.
" Those are our friends!" Yahiro shouted. She was never a fan of cops.
" You can't do this to us!" Miyako added. Chihiro was already on the ground crying.
" They're dead! They must be." Chihiro was sobbing her eyes out.
" Miss, no, they're not..." The officer made eye contact with Eumsong.
" They're deaaaad!" Chihiro's tears rolled down her pretty, blushed cheeks. " They're dead, oh god, they're dead!"
" Chihiro, they're fine." Eum picked her up and rubbed her back. " What's their condition?"
" We cannot release that information." He said.
" FOR GOD'S SAKE, TWO OF MY BEST FRIENDS ARE LYING IN A MELON CART AFTER A HORRIBLE ACCIDENT AND YOU CAN'T TELL ME US THEY'RE RESPONSIVE?!" Yahiro came charging at the man, her eyes beginning to turn gold before Miyako held her back.
" Attacking an officer of the law isn't worth it..." She mumbled. " We need everybody's support now, and that means you too."
The cop rubbed his eyes. " They're both alive." Was all he said.
Yura and Kiyoshi were pried apart and placed in ambulances. Yura was halfway responsive when they dragged her out.
" Melons!!!" She said, giggling. " They...are gooey."
" Do you girls know who could have been out to get them?" The cop asked. " They were hit from behind on purpose, ambushed, per say."
" Well...um..." Eum looked uncomfortable. " We'll get back to you on that. Right now, I think we all need to go home and process this."
Most of them nodded, except Yahiro, who began promptly toting herself and the girls along to the hospital.
This was going to be a wonderful two weeks.
