In the spring of 2014, Hurricane Monroe struck the small, seaside town of Jack Creek with the force of a thousand storms. When the rain and dark have lifted, Jack Creek County Police are tasked with the duty of finding and identifying the bodies littered amongst the rubble of a once-peaceful town. Martha Taylor is among the dead, crushed underneath the weight of her destroyed house. Her death is ruled as accidental, along with thirty-six other casualties, and her body is sent to the county morgue without a further question.
Except for the ones raised by Boo Taylor, Martha's only grandchild.
Boo is left feeling uneasy about her grandmother's demise, unable to shake the feeling that it was more than a hurricane that tore the life from Martha's lungs. Against the guidance of her estranged mother and the Jack Creek County Police Department, Boo sets out to uncover the truth. She soon stumbles into Harry, her grandmother's eccentric and extremely private neighbor; together, Boo and Harry weave their way through a fog of mystery, accidentally revealing a web of deceit, a disappearance that remains unsolved four and a half decades later, and an unseen character that threatens the placid nature of Jack Creek entirely.
