I'M BURNING

337 32 2

I'm knocked down, facing the sky

An epic battle is going on above me

Two, three, maybe four sides

I can't tell who's winning

Or what a victory will entail

How long will the battle go on

I hope not for much longer

Can I end it

I guess

But then no one wins

I can move

But there's no reason to

Will helping the battle along do more damage

Is that what I'm supposed to do

Maybe it'll resolve on its own

The battle burns brighter

And I need the battle to end

Because I'm tired

And would like to be left alone

And I'm not ready for a fight

I roll onto my stomach

Hold my breath

And get on all fours

I am not injured

But I am hurt

I sit on my ankles, sitting up

Looking around at the battle

No one notices how far I've come

The battle surges on

Will it ever end

I bring a leg out, in proposal position

I'm making improvements

I'm getting better

Closer

No one notices

I stand up

Take a sigh of relief

I won the battle

But no one notices

Why is the battle still burning

"I'm standing!" I yell

"So are we," the warriors chant back

They are alive and well

I am alive and well

This battle burns

Years pass and the battle is still burning

There are plenty of warriors left

But I know I am greater than them

I can beat them

I burn brighter than any battle
