I was writing in my journal when Sam woke up. He was making a few odd noises, twisting and turning in bed. I gave a final, longing glance at the Blade before setting it down and going to Sam. I sat beside him, brushing hair off his face.
"Sam," I whispered, trailing my hand down to his shoulder and shaking it. "Hey, baby, wake up." Sam startled, jolting up and taking a wild swing. I scrambled away, his fist missing my face by a few inches. His eyes snapped into focus, and he sunk back into the pillows.
"Are you okay?" he muttered as I lay beside him. I nodded, taking his hand and rubbing small circles into his palm.
"What did you dream about?" I asked quietly. Sam avoided my gaze, staring at our joined hands.
"You don't have to-" I started, but Sam shook his head.
"I dreamed about...about Lucifer," Sam said, voice shaking. "About my time in the Cage. What they...did... to me." I kept stroking Sam's palm, reassuring. The wave of exhaustion that followed my departing with the Blade washed over me.
"It's fine. Let's just sleep, okay?" I yawned. Sam's eyebrows furrowed.
"Yea, sure. Let's sleep."
My mom was screaming, blood staining her hands as she held the wound on Kristina's gut. All I saw was crimson, everywhere. The gun was shaking in my hand, the barrel still smoking. My vision was blurry as I reloaded the gun.
"How could you? She was your sister! You killed her. You killed us all. Why, Aria?" Mom chanted, her wide blue eyes questioning.
"I-I had to or e-else they would h-hurt me again... I can't t-take it anymore..." I stammered, not looking at them. My mother rose, her bloodied hands at her sides. I raised the pistol, clicking off the safety. I hesitated, though, and suddenly they disappeared. The demon appeared again- Asmodeous. My personal devil.
"Oh, my pet, you failed me again." he drawled. I snarled at him, throwing the gun at his chest.
'"Good!" I snapped. Asmodeous shook his head, taking the gun and instead pointing it at me.
"You know your punishment," Asmodeous sighed, lifting the gun at me. I spread my arms, laughing like a maniac.
"Go ahead! I don't even care anym-" I started, but the explosion of the gun cut me off. It ripped through my shoulder, tearing through the skin and muscle. I howled, falling to my knees and clutching my shoulder. Asmodeous didn't pause a second before firing off three more shots. They tore through my chest, stomach and thigh. I screamed, but laughed through the pain.
"Wow.. that one... was new," I teased harshly. Asmodeous chuckled as I grit my teeth. The pain had become a small comfort, something to remind me that I was still human. As I bled out, Asmodeous strode over and poked my arm. Instantly, my wounds healed. I gasped in air, smiling.
"Aw, Asmode, I knew you couldn't let me die," I coughed. Asmodeous curled his lip and yanked me up by my hair.
"Now," he hissed, "You're going to torture a real soul. And you're going to like it."
I woke with a jolt, alone in my room. Morning light filtered through the windows, blinding me. I blew out a breath, falling back into the pillows. Today was the big day. Today I was going to kill Abbadon. I was going to continue the legacy of Cain. To put an end to all this.
"Aria!" I heard Phoenix howl. "Get your big, lazy butt out of bed!" I groaned, rolling over and clearing my throat.
"Hush!" I called back. I rolled out of bed, threw on plaid pajama pants and strolled downstairs. Phoenix's stomach was huge, stretching the material of her shirt. Dallas followed her around, eyes weary. She was going to have her baby any day now.
