"What's up?" said Derrick in a calm voice. He chuckled at my reaction and apologized for the slight scare.

"You just always have some joke, right?" I said with a grin as we once again preformed our handshake.

We get the locks and choose which locker we want. Derrick immediately rushes to twenty-six. He always says it's his lucky number. Even though I've known him since fourth grade, he never said why. I just never bothered to ask. I took twenty-four next to his. We are between the two doors that lead into the hallway and the coach's office.

"Hey. You all need to buy uniforms at the book store this week. By next week, we'll start. But for now, you can grab a basketball and hang out in the practice gym while I check some records. Alright?" yelled coach Stone from his office. Everyone soon floods out to the practice gym straight across the hall. Derrick was already on the far end with a ball.

"Wyatt! Go!" he says while tossing the ball to me at half court. I run up while dribbling, spin around Derrick, and jump up to the rim. Sadly, I missed to have the ball bounce right into Derrick's hands.

"It's cool, man. You just need some more practice," he says while making it in without looking away from me.

"I know. So, how was your summer?"

"Eh. I was mostly at the gym or a training camp. Me and Jenna split."

"Ah. I'm sorry, man."

"No worries. I dumped her because she thought I put sports before her. I mean, she's still right,” he laughs

"You're something, dude. I just sat around writing some new stuff."

"Like what? Is it a poem, book, or song?"

"It’s a book. It got nowhere though so it's on the back burner for now."

"Cool. Maybe one day you can write about us."

"Ha. Maybe"

The class ends. I head out to the bike rack outside of the gym with Derrick. We ride together for a bit before we stop at an intersection down the road. The day is finally over.

"What do you think of that place?" Derrick asked as we approach the intersection.

"I don't really know. People seem good for the most part. That is, except for that jock."

"Yeah, but who needs him. I heard the dude got in a fight and got suspended."

"Damn. Well, what do you think?"

"Honestly, you, Rachel and I have been through a lot together. As long as we're close, nothing can stop us. You know?"

"Yeah, we're like brothers after all."

"We will be until the end, man. Well here's where I get off. Later."

"Later." I say as we part ways at the intersection.

My first day is over. It was pretty eventful to say the least. Hopefully, I can get used to it. I guess time will tell. Please, get better.
