It was a long weekend. A few weeks into high school and I'm part of some rebellion. Solid start I guess. Monday came and Kyle wasn't in class. I bet my life savings that he is twiddling his thumbs in the garage. The day moved fast as lunch came around within what felt like a few seconds. Everyone sat at the table as we tried to discuss our lives outside of Kyle's problems. We did well until Joel pulled some old newspaper from his bag.

"Guys, I was looking for info on the Clique Olympics and found this from over a year ago." He said as he placed it firmly on the table and began to read it word for word.

"School Super Event Turns Sour

Tri Point High's two week event, the Clique Olympics, came to a bitter end yesterday. The final challenge was to be held between the Jocks, who defeated the very popular Beauties, and the Nerds, who forged a win against the Goth team. However, rumors have spread that Lincoln Renolds, Nerd captain, sabotaged the Jock team's phones and emails to say the finals were hours later.

Due to the absence of an opponent, the Nerds were victorious by forfeit. Later in the day, the awards were held as Renolds accepted the gold medal during the ceremony.

'It is a true honor to know my superior intellect struck fear into those meathead brains to where they were too afraid to show.'

But, despite being late to the finals, the Jock team was in time to catch the last of Lincoln's speech. In a fit of rage, the athletes rushed the stage and proceeded to assault the Nerd team. The Beauties and Goths soon joined the brawl although it was soon broken up by school and police officials. At the end of the exchange, nearly a dozen students were left hospitalized and two in critical condition. Some students have been aprehended due to the violent actions.

Principal Bret Kendon commented on the incident. 'This was supposed to be a way for students to be proud of whom they are. I did not anticipate the devastating outcome.'

The creator of the event and student, Kyle Owlsand, was confronted after the stadium was evacuated. 'I just... we could have... this was supposed to...' he mumbled before marching away. From what we know, the Clique Olympics will not return next year."

Joel folded the paper as it seemed time has stopped.

"Dear God," Amy said in a horrified tone.

"Do you guys think Kyle is doing this to sort of fix what happened then?" Derrick asked as his voice sagged.

None of us answered. The awkward silence only lasted a minute before the bell rang. The day was normal but the article stuck with me. As Derrick and I reach the intersection on the way home, I pulled him close.

"Whatever happens, we have each other's backs, right?" I'm not sure why I needed reassurance as I've known him for years.

"Yeah, I just wish this whole thing won't be the only thing we can talk about at lunch."

"I know. Well, see you tomorrow, man," I say as we part ways. I wish for the same thing.
