The Gladers gathered around the supply lift. They opened the doors. However, they were not quite prepared for what they discovered lying unconscious in the lift.

Newt jumped down into the metal lift to awake the new arrival.
"It's a...girl!" Newt's perplexed voice pierced through the silence.
Usually when a new greenie came up there was a raucous commotion. Today everyone stood still.
Then they began to whisper.

The first thing she heard was muttering...
"A girl?"
"What?"
"It can't be!"
"Are you sure Newt?"
Newt? Like the lizard?
The first thing she saw was a face. A face with kind brown eyes, framed by a head of blonde hair. Then the face spoke.

"Um...hi?" Newt began and found that he didn't quite know what to say. After all, he didn't remember ever speaking to a girl before. Her eyes were wide and unknowing, like those of a trapped animal. Who was she? And why send a girl into a group of boys anyway? In any case, he needed to let her know she wasn't in danger.

"Don't worry, I'm a friend..." the boy rested his hand gently on her shoulder, "...it's okay, we won't hurt you."
She looked into his eyes, searching for any hint of a lie, cautious and untrusting. For some odd reason, Newt could not take his eyes from hers. He wanted...no he needed her to trust him.
"I promise," he vowed softly.
Newt could swear he saw the fear fade from her blue eyes, just a little.
"Do you want to try standing up? I'll help you if you need me to."
She nodded and Newt steadied her as she tried to get up. Then she cried out in pain. She'd forgotten she was injured.
Newt's eyes furrowed in concern. "Are you alright?" He saw that she was bleeding and shouted to the others, "Oi! We need some help here she's hurt! Quick someone help me get her to the bloody med-jacks! NOW!"
He turned back to her to comfort her, "It's going to be okay, you're going to be fine alright? You're gonna be fine I promise."

It wasn't long before she was being lifted and carried...
Still hurt, but now a little less frightened.
