As promised, the house delivered her right into his arms. She was crying like the other girl but she had the mark on her--the house wanted her. Her skin glowed like she was radioactive and her eyes burned like tiny flames trapped in her skull. This was the one and he was happy. He could wait forever if he needed to, but knew the house would give him what had to be done and for that he was thankful.

He would grab her when she walked past him on the driveway. He'd pull her into the trees, cut her up a little to get her to stop fighting, and then he'd bring her inside. Not just inside, of course, but down into the basement. Down for the feeding.

She descended the steps and headed across the front lawn in a direct path for the sidewalk.

Damn. Was the house testing his dedication?

No time to wonder about the greater forces at work.

He jumped from the bushes and ran after her.
