She came out of the river into an even darker world. Something groaned down here, huge and hungry. The world filled with the pungent smell of candied apples. The aroma was so sweet that it stole Vanessa away into another life.

It was a blessing.

When the house began to tear her body to pieces, Vanessa thought about being a little girl and going to the annual Pumpkin Festival. Her mother always bought her a candied apple and her dad always tried to get her to go into the haunted house of terror, but she never did.

She was too young, far too small to withstand the horrors inside.
