On the 15th of July, 1789, Lafayette was elected commander of a new National guard. His job was to protect the monarchy.

Yes, he swapped sides. He saw how bloody the French Revolution was becoming and tried to stop it.

Lafayette and his troops helped Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette flee Versailles. Lafayette later ordered his guards to open fire on a group of protesters.

Then, the monarchy fell and Lafayette was now hated by all of France. There was a warrant for his arrest.

Lafayette tried to flee across Europe but failed. France and Austria recently gone to war (the French like war or something) and Lafayette was captured.
