First Hunt

Jacob

The wolves were growing as fast as I thought they would. Today I decided would be the perfect time to teach them how to hunt for their own food. I couldn't let them become too dependent on us, taking the wildness out of the animal is just one of the cruelest things you can do. Ness pretended that she didn't mind having the gates taken down but every time I'd come home from work, she and Anthony would be out on the back porch playing with the pups. I warned her not to let him get too attached to them but she was just as bad, she loved them.

When I had asked her to take down the gates while we went out to hunt, her big brown eyes welled up with tears and I quickly took it back. Her hormones have been going crazy now, I could tell she felt silly but I would never make her feel bad about it. The other day when I came home, she and Anthony had both been sitting down in the kitchen crying together. Anthony had pulled out all the napkins out of the drawer and Ness scolded him for it and then felt bad for doing so. I had to reassure that she is indeed a good mother and that he'd get over it. I just found it best to be calm and give her what she needed when she got worked up like that.

I guess it wouldn't hurt for the gate to be up for a couple more weeks. At least until the wolves got the hang of going hunting on their own.

"Dinner will be done by the time you come back. How does chicken cacciatore sound?" she got on her tiptoes to give me a kiss.

She has been cooking a lot of Italian lately but I didn't mind one bit.

"Sounds great, I'll be back soon."

I bent down and gave A.J. a fist bump, "Watch on your mommy for me, bud."

"Okay, Daddy!"

I unhooked the gate to let the wolves out and stripped down into my boxers. I turned to wave at Ness and Anthony before I let the heat roll through me. The wolves looked at me skeptically but I did what I did before and laid on my back and let them sniff me. Once they were okay, I led them into the woods. We followed the tracks of an elk and once we found where it was located, I made sure that they were watching me closely. This would be so much easier if they had the pack mind and they could just read my thoughts.

I crouched down and snuck up on the elk before pouncing on it. I made sure they watched me as I snapped its neck to put it out of its misery before I motioned them to come and dig in.  The elk was on the smaller size but that was fine since the three of them were still small. After they finished eating, I showed them how to dig a hole up for the carcass and we buried the elk. I wanted to tell them "good job" but I remembered that we couldn't communicate.

When we neared the house, the smells that were certainly coming from the kitchen filled my nostrils. Ooh, dinner was definitely gonna be a hit. I lead the pups back to their gate and nudged it shut with my snout before phasing back and pulling on my shorts.

"How did it go?" Ness asked me when I came inside.

"Good, I think I'll go with them a few more times before I let them go by themselves," I leaned down to kiss her cheek and make my plate.

"Good," she said, even though I knew she was less than pleased about the gate coming down soon, "A.J. is in his room playing with his ball, can you bring him down for me?"

"Of course."

I ran up the stairs and got Anthony and went right back downstairs and listened to him talk about his favorite ball and how he likes to play with the ball with Pizza. I swear when this kid learns more words, he'll talk nonstop.

"I hope he likes it," Ness said as she put his plate on his tray.

Turns out he did.
