They hadn't spoken much in the time they'd been together. To be fair, they hadn't been together for long. Still, Phoebe knew they had a lot of things to discuss, even if she didn't want to discuss them at that moment. There were fifteen years of lost time between them, and maybe Phoebe was selfish, but she wanted to know everything. Wanted to know about Narnia, about their rule, about all the things they'd done there - even if every time she kissed Peter, all those thoughts went right out of her head.
"We should- we should probably get back." Phoebe was well aware that her voice was breathy, and she felt heat creep into her cheeks. She couldn't help the effect he had on her, after all. It was sad that they would have to leave this little bubble that they had made, but Phoebe knew she and Peter would find time again. He smiled slightly, still remarkably close to her face. If it was possible, Phoebe thought she felt herself blush even deeper.
"Probably." At least he sounded just as breathless. Phoebe knew that the happiness shining in his eyes must have been mirrored in her own. He held his hand out for her to take, and Phoebe gladly slipped her hand into his. They fit well together. As they exited the room, hand in hand, Phoebe leaning into Peter as she had been moments ago, Phoebe stole a glance back at the carving of Aslan on the wall. She uttered a silent thanks to him, to her mother, to whatever deep magic governed them now. The happiness she felt now was due to them.
The journey back to the larger chamber felt like it took half the amount of time as Peter and Phoebe walked it together. Their hands stayed linked all the while. Phoebe was so happy that she couldn't really begin to care about what any of the others would think. She hoped they would be happy, but at least she knew Ed would be pretty content. After all, he'd practically orchestrated the whole thing. Phoebe marvelled at the thirteen-year-old's brain on a regular basis.
Caspian would be happy, because at least now Peter might start being useful in meetings again. Phoebe added that to her mental list of things she had to talk about with Peter. She knew they couldn't jump right back to the way they were, but at least she was with him now. At least they were talking. She wouldn't change that for the world, even if they did have a few things to talk about.
The mood in the meal chamber when they reentered wasn't nearly as tense as it had been when Phoebe had left. In fact, it was almost cheerful. Conversations had restarted, and the familiar clink of cutlery echoed through the room. Phoebe and Peter almost managed to enter unnoticed. Almost.
"Bloody finally!" Edmund's voice was loud enough that it nearly silenced the room, and Phoebe felt her blush return with a passion. Peter gave her hand a small squeeze, and she smiled. Across the room, Phoebe met Edmund's eyes, and she could practically see the laughter there. He was enjoying this far too much. "Susan, you owe me." Phoebe followed Edmund's eyes and saw that Susan and Caspian had turned to look at her, both looking perfectly happy. Relief washed over Phoebe in a wave. Susan clearly wasn't holding a grudge.
