You breathed heavily as you walked into the side room of the stage, past the line of people who have yet to go. Katelyn sat down in a chair, and leaned back as you slid your violin case onto a table, putting your violin in it, followed by the bow. You shut the case, and grabbed the case containing the music boxes. You sighed, trying to calm your racing heart.
"Good job." Came an unknown voice. You snapped your head to look over, scanning the line for the source. Nobody else spoke, aside from the muttering of various people going over lines.
Another burst of applause came up, as someone began to sing another song.
You smiled as the song played, thinking to yourself. In cliche fan fiction, people never performed only to perform. They always had a reason, like somehow confessing love, or just straight up indirectly roasting an ex. As you listened to the song, you wondered what this person had for a reason to perform. Maybe they were bummed by a breakup? Parents disown them? You would never know. You closed your eyes and thought. If all people had a reason, then what was yours?
You thought over the possibilities. Maybe you just wanted to show off, to try and get on the school website? No, you didn't really care. Your decision to play was kind of impulse, like someone had made the decision for you...
You put that thought aside. The thought of someone controlling your actions when you weren't aware... scary.
You thought back to why you chose to play. It was your decision to play. Did you want to impress your family? Friends? Just start up old habits again? You shook your head lightly at each thought. You wouldn't let it bother you.
"Hey Y/n!" Your mom almost yelled. You had left the backstage and just shut the door behind you. You smiled as you saw her wild grin."You did an amazing job playing! I'm really impressed!" You put your hand to your chin before arcing it down, in a gesture of Thank You. Your mom nodded in response, smile wide.
"Alright, shall we watch the rest of the show?" Your mom asked. You nodded in response.
"Yo Y/n!" You and your mom were interrupted by someone calling your name. You looked over at the direction of the voice to spot Travis, walking up. You waved at him.
"You did awesome playing that song!" You smiled, doing the sign language sign for Thank You again. Travis chuckled, a hint of confusion in his eyes, before looking at your mom.
"What did he say?" He asked. Your mom laughed.
"He said thanks." She responded.
"Oh yeah, no problem. And you're lucky, getting to be paired with Katelyn!" You shrugged.
I'm not into her, if that's what you mean. You signed. Travis looked at your mom for translation. She sighed.
"He said, 'I'm not into her, if that's what you mean.' You need a translator, Y/n." She translated. You nodded, as Travis did as well.
"Well, That Katelyn there is really something, so count your blessings, my guy." You slowly nodded as you heard another door open. Followed by another familiar voice.
"Hey!" Aphmau yelled as she walked out, followed by Kawaii~Chan. You waved.
"You were so good with that violin! How did you learn to play so fast?" Aphmau asked. You held up your hands.
I have known how to play the violin for years. After translation via your mom, Kawaii~Chan started speaking.
"Kawaii~Chan has to admit, Y/n~Kun really surprised Aphmau~Senpai and Kawaii~Chan with his playing." You blushed at the compliment.
"How did Y/n~Kun learn to play?" Kawaii~Chan asked.
I first learned at like 10 years old from videos and books. Your mom translated the sentence again.
"Y/n, you seriously need a translator." Your mom said. You nodded.
I don't want to hire anybody, too much hassle. Your mom nodded, looking at your friends who were watching, before sighing and holding up her own hands.
Why don't you teach your friends? You seem to like that KC girl. You facepalmed at your mom's sign language, feeling your face grow hot.
Maybe someday. I prefer to write, thank you very much. Your mom sighed and shook her head.
"Alright, Fine." She said. Travis cleared his throat.
"So... What was that? All I got out of it was 'Thank you.'" You have Travis a thumbs up. The music playing ended, with another burst of applause.
"Looks like that guy just finished his act." Aphmau said. She looked at the door, then back at you and your mom.
"Well, I better get back to the show. See you in school Y/n!" She said, starting to walk back. You gave her a thumbs up.
"Yeah, I'll go too. See ya later man!" Travis called out, walking back as well. You waved at him. All that was left was you, your mom, and Kawaii~Chan.
"Umm.... Kawaii~Chan better get going to the show. She'll see Y/n~Kun in school, right?" Kawaii~Chan spoke timidly. You smiled and nodded. She began to walk back. As she shut the theater door behind her, another song started up.
You looked at your mom.Where is Dad? You signed. Your mom smiled.
"He got escorted out of the school because he had an animal on school property. He'll be back in time to pick us up." You nodded, as your mom began to walk into the auditorium. You paused for a minute, unsure of yourself, before following her inside.
