CHAPTER 11: Two Lonely Stars

DEKU - PAST

Click

I try not to jump when the sound of the door closing echoes in the darkness.

The sky has cleared from the rain, and I look up to see the moon.

They say it's impossible to count all the stars, but whoever 'They' are is an idiot.

Because in my world there are no stars.

There's only one lonely star, and one lonely me.

But...

My brow furrows as my eyes trace across the dark night sky.

There!

In the distance, there's another star.

It's also isolated from any other stars, but it's still there.

Two lonely stars...two lonely people?

I laugh humorlessly and shake my head.

No, if there was any other person in the world to endure darkness like me, they're an idiot.

I smirk.

Tch, idiot.

Thump!

My heart stops.

'Who's there?!' I want to yell, but my cowardliness holds my tongue in place.

Directly across from me, some bushes start rattling.

My eyes widen and my breathing quiets down.

I don't even notice my hand as it unconsciously grips the knife under my shirt.

Rattle, rattle.

I pull out the knife and clench my jaw. 'I'll fight back, I'll never be a coward again!' I thought while getting into a fighting stance.

The rattling gets more intense until suddenly...

"Meow."

A small black cat jumps out of the bushes, and looks at me.

What startles me more is that the cat has two different colored eyes.

One is blue, and another is green.

'A cat with heterochromia...' I think, looking at the knife in my hand.

'God I'm so jumpy...Kacchan was right, I'm a goddamn pussy.'

I slip the knife back under my shirt, and offer the cat the best smile I can give at the moment.

"Hey little guy," I say a bit shakily, "Don't scare me like that, please, I could've hurt you."
