"did you go to a friends house after school?" corbyn's mother came from the kitchen on her computer.

shit i forgot to text her, "um so...i kind of got detention."

she looked at corbyn with confusion, "detention? corbyn matthew what did you do?"

"i saw someone i didn't know smoking and i didn't want them to get in trouble... so i took it away from them but before i could throw it away the gym teacher saw us" corbyn explained.

she nodded, "and he gave you both detention? did you explain the situation?"

"i didn't want to argue with mr. johnson and make the situation worse" corbyn mumbled as he got a water out of the fridge.

he was surprised his mother didn't bite his head off after he said detention and smoking within seconds of each other.

"does that mean you're benched for your next volleyball game?" she asked quietly.

corbyn and his siblings always had good grades; college was the number one priority in their house.

they all played sports and participated in after school activities that would look good on their résumés.

"yes..." corbyn said clearly knowing if he mumbled his mother would snap at him.

she nodded as she typed away at her computer, "you'll have to tell your father when he gets home."

"i will" corbyn said before he went upstairs.

he passed his sisters room, "what're you working on?"

she glanced up at him from her desk, "my english essay, could you read it for me and make sure it makes sense?"

"yeah, give it to me" he said and she passed him her laptop, "i'll be back."

he walked in to his room with the silver mac book and laid on his bed as he scrolled through the six page's worth if writing.

corbyn sighed as he rewrote a few sentences and respelled a couple misspelled words.

this was a normal thing for the children to do; help the others with their homework.

he finished and went back to his sister room where she sat on her bed, reading to kill a mockingbird.

"here i reread it a couple times and i think its good" corbyn said as he passed her the laptop.

"thank you" she smiled at him and he nodded as he closed her door gently.

corbyn sat through the volleyball game without a word.

his team was down a few points and other were getting frustrated with every second that passed.

corbyn heard the ball smack against the ground, and corbyn thought to when he told his father about his detention.

his father walked through the door with his briefcase in hand.

"father can i talk to you?" corbyn asked and his father looked at him in confusion before nodding.

corbyn followed his father in to his office and explained to him the situation.

"detention and your benched? corbyn matthew, my son should not be getting benched let alone in trouble!" his father snapped.

corbyn stood there staring down at his feet anxiously not saying a word until his father was finished.

"what were you thinking grabbing that cigarette out of a stranger's hand?" his father asked.

corbyn hesitated, not sure if his father was done speaking, "i didn't want him to get-"

"in trouble? that didn't exactly work did it." his father snapped before turning away from corbyn.

"i don't want to talk you anymore," his father said coldly.

the buzzard snapped corbyn back to reality and he looked at the scoreboard; 1-3.

"they lost."
