i promise

we say, "i'll see you in the morning,"
but who really knows?

you say i'm the only one, but that's just me stupidly trusting the words that roll off of your lips in your routine for every girl.

they promise me you're different.
we both know i've been lied to.
you're the same as any other guy that has swept me off of my feet...
your fake love throws me into a scorching fire of pain and regret.

we connect our pinkies as children and squeeze as hard as we can.
we seal our lips to keep the secret by pushing our thumbs into one another's to lock the secret up.

they promise tomorrow will be better,
they say i will be stronger,
but let's face it...
that's not always how it goes-
maybe you won't get the chance to have a 'tomorrow.'

you promise you love me.
you hold me in your arms until the clock tears us away from each other;
ripping at our heart strings and making us beg for more time.

we assume we have another day,
"oh, that won't happen to me."
trust me; it can happen.

we take for granted the first time our eyes flutter open in the morning as we complain about work and school...
we wait for the day of graduation,
of retirement, expecting it to happen.
it's simply what we have always been promised-
more time.

we promise we didn't go to that party.
we promise we didn't kiss.
we promise each other the rest of our lives.
we promise ourselves a better year.

we promise things no one can guarantee.

we
sell
our
future
using two
words...

i promise.
