After the senior's big speech to us, we were now wondering if we could  get out of this without getting hurt.  Hersch was pretty confident that we were doomed, it would take a miracle to get out of this, and, I have to admit, I was feeling that way too.  I decided to see if I could simply get away on foot unless Lampwick was gonna come get me.

Mitch and I looked at the clock, every second felt like an eternity.

It was only a few more minutes before we had to start running for our lives to save ourselves

Mitch glanced at me, "You got a plan for this, Pinoke?"  I shrugged, "I think our best bet is to just run and hope they aren't faster

Mitch glanced at me, "You got a plan for this, Pinoke?"  I shrugged, "I think our best bet is to just run and hope they aren't faster.  Best case scenario, my brother comes for me."  Then, almost immediately, the bell rang.  I gave him a nervous glance as he patted my shoulder, "Good luck man, stay safe." "You too, Mitch." I replied.

As we ran out of the building, throwing out our tests and homework and what-not, we started working to get away

As we ran out of the building, throwing out our tests and homework and what-not, we started working to get away.  It looked like I was gonna be running after all.  I got as far as the parking lot and then,

"Oh my gosh!" I yelled.  I seemed to know, without asking, that this was their leader: Fred O'Bannion.  He looked at me with an evil eye, "Ooooooo, boy.  A duck on the pond!"  The driver poked his head around, "How you doin' boy?"  I wasted no time, I ran as fast as my legs would carry me!

It wasn't rocket science to figure out this guy was a bully and was proud of it.  He had a constant evil gleam in his eye.  Even his laugh was horrifying and could send chills down your spine!

After quite a few minutes of running, I was starting to run out of breath, but I kept going

After quite a few minutes of running, I was starting to run out of breath, but I kept going.  I knew I was going to get too exhausted if I didn't stop soon.  So, I saw my chance and retreated into a nearby alley.  They passed by, so I figured I was safe.  I took a few minutes to catch my breath, it looked like I had escaped them.  But then, I didn't have alot of time to start feeling safe.

As I caught my breath, I spotted a shadow coming up behind me.  I turned around and found myself face-to-face with the worst of them all: Fred O'Bannion, Donnie, Mel, and Benny.  I was told stories of them, like when they paddled you, they always made sure it was extra hard, and, if they were feeling extra mean, they would give you some extra wounds that suited them.

I started to shake, I was so sure I could get away from them, finally, Fred broke the silence, "Did you really think you could get away from us, freshman?" I nodded, "Please don't hurt me." I squeeked.  They smirked at each other, then it was Don's turn to cut up as they shoved me against the wall, "Awwwww, poor baby! We ain't gonna hurt ya....Much!" I glanced at him with sweating starting to form on my brow, then O'Bannion throwed in, "Just so long as you stay still and squeel like a pig."  Here he imitated a pig squeel and got started on me, all of them laughing and teasing me the whole time.

When they finally finished, I was a mess.  They had already decided to give me a bruise on my forehead that knocked me over.  I didn't even bother trying to get back up or hide anything, I just cried.  I never dreamt that someone would do something like this.

After what felt like hours, they finally left.  I then heard a motor cut off and braced myself for what would happen next, hiding my face in my knees.  When I looked up, I was surprised to find Lampy standing over me, giving me a compassionate smile, "Need a hand?" he asked.  I gladly took it.  After standing me up again, he pulled me into a squeeze while I tried to hold in my sobs.  Here he looked down at me, "Dang, slats. You can cry if you need to, I won't judge." That made me feel so much better, I sobbed into him as he ran his fingers through my hair.  This always felt really good, just to have someone who won't judge you for crying.

When I finished after a few minutes, I lifted my head and wiped my face, "Poor little thing, just broke your little heart didn't they?" Knowing Lampwick, he wouldn't have done this for just anybody or at just anytime, I nodded.  He put his arm around me, "Come on, I'll take you home."
