"Don't be a dick, she saved your life," Mith said with a sniff.

"No she didn't, you did," Will said irritably.

His voice carried in the quiet.

The siren stopped singing and cocked her head to side, peering curiously at Will. The sky was still and black, and the stars sparkled above them. The starlight illuminated the three figures, giving them a silver sheen.

Mith looked like she was about to argue. She opened her mouth to say something, oblivious to the sudden look of terror that had appeared on the siren's face. Had she turned around, she might have realised that the siren in fact did not  want Will to get to know about her rather unique powers.

"Now you're just being stupid," Mith said stubbornly. "Her song quietened the lyre and made that club-swinging assclown disappear. The least you can do is not behave like a colossal moron."

The change in Will was immediate. His eyes lit up and his signature manic grin appeared.

The siren took one look at Will's face then wailed and tried to lift off, her powerful bat wings producing gusts of air. Her claw-feet kicked outwards and her arms spread wide.

Will, lovely soul that he was, leapt up and pinned her down in a flash.

The siren kicked and screamed. One of her claws raked Will's cheek, leaving a livid red gash that oozed blood.

"Dude what the hell, let her go!" Mith yelled.

"A siren whose song can stop the lyre and put the monsters to sleep. How very interesting," Will said conversationally, and then pulled out his knife. The siren's green eyes went wide with terror.

Mith tried to shove him away from where he knelt over the siren. He didn't budge.

"Seriously, what's your problem? Stop it!" Mith's voice rose an octave, because she was sure that something terrible was about to happen.

Will ignored Mith, and then used his knife to slash the siren's delicate wings to literal shreds. His knife tore through the thin membranes, and with each cut the siren howled louder.

She screamed in agony, and Will stepped back to admire his handiwork, leaving her to thrash around. The tears in the siren's wings wept scarlet blood.

Mith spun around to face Will, her face pale with horror and nausea.

"What the fuck was that?" she cried.

Will ignored her yet again, then looked the siren straight in the eye.

"Since you're obviously not going anywhere for the next couple of weeks, would you be interested in helping me free some monsters?" He asked, freakishly cheerful.

The siren sobbed in anguish, teardrops settling on her eyelashes and running down her cheeks. Mith knelt down next to her, then removed her own camisole and used it to staunch the blood flow from some of the bigger cuts.

Blood always made her nauseous, but she didn't say anything, gently dabbing the siren's wounds.

Will sat down cross-legged next to Mith, examining the siren's wings with an almost morbid curiosity. She cringed.
