When Desmond refused to hold a gun, he was rejected, bullied and sent to a military prison. He was confused to why he was being assigned as a rifleman and not a medic. But the judge allowed him to go to war as a combat medic. Once, during lunch time, a man warned him for his beliefs and threatened to harm him. This did not stop Doss though. He eventually became a combat medic. He was to March 25 miles as training. Everyone thought that since he did not have a rifle or ammo, it would be easier for him. But he had to carry 2 medical bags that were equally heavy and much more akward to carry. Many of the soldiers were injured, and Doss insisted to check everyone's feet to make sure there are no blisters. Passed out soldiers were carried to comfortable resting spots until they woke up. For the first time, he was treated as one of their own. He was very respected after that march. His role as a combat medic was official. He was headed to Guam for battle in the 77th division.
