Next, Doss had to fight in Leyte, Philippines. While in the war, his friend tried to help a machine gunner but was shot and died. The machine gunner, however, was able to recover. From that point on, he never looked at any of the faces he was treating, in case it was another one of his friends again. On top of that, he was always hungry, since he was vegetarian. He only ate coconuts and tasteless soldier crackers he found. But eating coconuts from the ground gave him diarrhea, forcing him to climb the trees for fresh coconuts. At one point, Doss was looking for fresh coconuts when he spotted Japanese machine gunners killed by his comrades. Apparently, they have been drunk on "sakey". Another thing that shocked Doss was that the man who threatened him during training is now asking him for guidance and help.
