Riley's POV
I have been delivered been to a foster house. A foster house. I hate this already and I haven't stepped inside. Everyone is obnoxiously nice. A sign if evil my mom used to say.
I feel my eyes get wet.
It has been two years since they died but little things -like that- are enough to make me bawl my eyes out.
I blink back tears and step inside.
This place is full of idiots. I can feel it. Even though I haven't met anyone.
"Riley, we're going to put most of your stuff in storage."
I turn to see a person. Only a person because I'm not going to label these people. I don't want to get attached. But it's hard to get attached to idiots. That's what I keep telling myself.
I just hope I don't meet a girl who is lovable. Or a boy. Or an adult. Or something.
Shoot that would be horrible.
"Ok... Where should I go?" I ask, turning to look at the large staircase that goes up and turns right, and to the left is an office with the door ajar, to the right is a family type of room that leads back to a kitchen.
"Go up the staircase and straight ahead. There's a door marked Girls."
"Ok, thanks."
"You'll have fun here Riley." Yeah right.
"Ok... Thank you again." I turn and go up the stairs. I can tell the lady knows I'm not happy. The lady's name was Elizabeth. Dang it. Now she's a human not a person. Now I could get attached. I curse in my mind and see the door ahead of me. It's decorated with butterflies and flowers and peace signs and stereotypical girl stuff.
I push the door open and am blinded by pink.
Ugh. For goodness sake. Gender stereotypes.
I walk in and see a girl about my age and walk over.
"Hi..." My voice is quiet, dang it nerves.
"Hey." She replies without looking up.
"What's you name?" I feel awkward. I feel like I'm talking to a brick wall.
"Jade." She looks up from her book. "You?"
"Riley."
She scoots over on the twin bed and pats it, I sit.
"So Riley," she says, picking up her book. "Have you read this?"
I read the title. The Mysterious Benedict Society. What?
"No.."
"It's awesome." She puts it down. "So why are you here? Visiting someone? Is your family going to adopt?" She got excited. "Are you scouting out a perfect new sister? Because that could be me!" She fell back onto the bed her arms on her chest.
"No..." I feel bad.
"Oh, ok, well that's fine." She sat up and swept long dark hair from her shoulders.
"I wish I had hair like yours." Did I just say that out loud?!?
"I wish mine was short like yours." I looked in a mirror across the room. Who would want to look like me? A regular height girl with dirty brown blonde just barely touching the shoulders hair? And hazel eyes? I wanted blue, or just green. I didn't like the way I look, but it's something I can't change.
