PART FOUR ↳ unlikely allies
THE DRIVE TO THE OTHER SIDE of town was swift and filled with a sort of uneasy silence. The normally energetic and light hearted group of boys had been shaken, deeply.
If Penelope was being perfectly honest with herself, seeing the unnatural and sudden end to the road had left her feeling slightly nauseous as well.
The longer she remained in this strange reality, the scarier she realised it was to actually be here.
Sure, on television it may have appeared to be an oasis of sorts, but all Penelope could think about was the awful events that were yet to come.
These terrible things were going to happen to the people who she had genuinely come to care for.
It was as if Grizz didn't even need to look at her to know exactly how she was feeling, he didn't turn his head away from the many abandoned buildings they passed as he instinctively placed one hand atop Penelope's knee.
She sighed but gently placed one of her hands on top the one on her knee. The warm pressure of his palm helped to keep her grounded as her thoughts rushed to a million different places.
She caught Harry's eye in the mirror a number of times as he looked between her and the other passengers. Penelope couldn't help but wonder what it would feel like for these people.
Their entire lives had been uprooted in a single day, leaving them with no choice but to come up with new rules and a new way of living.
Penelope didn't bother to leave the car this time. Harry brought his car to a screeching halt on the bridge above the train lines that should head directly outside of town.
She already knew it was a dead end, but had she spoke up about it beforehand her group would have grown suspicious. She watched in silence as the rest of the boys exited the car to gape out at the tree line that should have been the way out of their small town.
