PART THIRTY ↳ a welcome distraction
FOUR DAYS SINCE THE CONCLUSION OF GREG DEWEY'S TRIAL and the more time that passed the more anxious everyone seemed to become. Allie was dragging her decision out and nobody could seem to breath easy until she made her choice.
Penelope tried her best to comfort her friends, knowing how Allie's decision was likely to pan out. Harry had been understandably distant since Dewey had outed him at the end of his trial and rather than suffocate him, Nell was trying to give him space. So between her work duties, she took the time to visit everyone that she hadn't had the time to see lately.
Grizz, Jason, Clark and Luke were all usually so busy with guard duties, so Penelope organised for Gordie to keep watch over Dewey for one night and they all had a chance to hang out. They met up first to sneak some alcohol from the secret stock in the cafeteria, and then made their way over to the school's football field.
Penelope found herself walking beside Luke as the other three spoke about football ahead of them. If Grizz didn't exist, Penelope would probably be closest to Luke out of their little group. He was often a voice of wisdom among idiots and she admired him for that, they had always been good friends.
She had never seen him look as nervous as he did right now, as he tried to find the words to speak to her, "Nell, c-can I talk to you about something?"
Penelope turned to him with a soft smile, "Of course Luke, anything."
"You have to swear you won't say anything to the guys though, I don't want them to know just yet," he stressed, not meeting her eyes.
"Okay, I promise."
Luke took a deep breath before all of the words seemed to spill out of him like word vomit, "I'm gonna ask Helena to marry me."
Penelope could feel herself grinning from ear to ear. She'd known that already, but the fact that he was telling her first was very sweet. She pasted on her best surprised expression and turned to grin at him, "Really? Luke that's awesome!"
He seemed quite taken aback that she was so positive about it, "Really? You don't think it's a stupid idea or that we're too young?"
