PART SEVENTEEN ↳ bury a friend
PENELOPE WAS ALONE WHEN SHE WOKE UP ON the morning of Cassandra's funeral. Grizz had left a note saying that he was sorry but he had to leave to help the guard make preparations. Her stomach had wretched at the thought, her best friend had left to dig the grave of the girl who Penelope couldn't save.
Grizz had laid out a plain black dress on the chair in her room, that he had no doubt taken from their shared closet at home. Penelope sat up in the hospital bed for what felt like hours, just staring at the horrid gown.
She knew that Grizz had probably forgotten, but it was the same dress she'd worn to her mother's funeral years ago. It was also the only black dress she owned so she couldn't blame him for choosing it.
A gentle knock on the door caught her by surprise and she finally detaches her eyes from the dress to meet Elle's timid gaze as she stands awkwardly in the doorway.
Penelope forces a smile upon her face, not wanting to let her own mood effect others, "Hey, Elle. Come in." Elle pads a few steps inside the room and glances over at the dreaded black dress.
"Hey uh- I hope this isn't totally weird but Grizz sent me a text saying that you might need some help getting ready for this morning," she rambles nervously.
Penelope's fake smile transforms into a genuine one as Grizz's concern for everyone besides himself never ceases to amaze her, "Of course he did."
Elle's face falls and she begins to back away, "I'm sorry, I knew this was a stupid idea."
"No, no! Elle I didn't mean it like that I- I would actually really appreciate the help," Penelope is quick to reassure the hesitant girl.
Elle smiles in relief and grabs the dress as she makes her way over to Penelope. The redhead swings her legs gently over the side of the bed and stands slowly.
It takes some time, but with some very careful maneuvering, the girls manage to dress Penelope without too much stress on her gunshot wound. Elle helps the other girl apply some light makeup and then helps her fix up her hair.
When they're finally finished, Penelope turns to the girl with a smile, "Thank you, Elle. I know we haven't been able to hang out as often lately but I hope you know that I really appreciate our friendship."
Elle smiles broadly at Nell, "Me too, you're one of the only girls who's made the effort to be my friend and I hope you know that I really appreciate it."
