PART TWENTY ONE ↳ realisations
HARRY AND PENELOPE WALKED TO THEIR SHARED DINNER DUTY sometime later that day, hands joined together tightly. They hadn't spoken much since their moment by the poolside but it hadn't been an uncomfortable silence. They were both simply content to drown in their own thoughts for a few hours, using the other's hand as their anchor to the real world.
Although they were still many unsaid words between them, Penelope was mentally exhausted and had decided to let both herself and Harry breathe for at least a day before she attempted to have a discussion with him about his potential drug problem.
She needed at least a day to work out how she was going to approach the subject up anyway. She didn't want to scare him and therefore ruin the delicate relationship that had begun to bloom between them. She might be the only person close enough to him, besides Kelly, in this entire town to have his trust and she couldn't risk betraying it.
As they make their way into the kitchen, Nell catches a glimpse of Elle's blonde hair as the girl prepares some vegetables on a wooden board and the redhead suddenly has a new mission.
With everything that had been going on she was ashamed that she had almost forgotten about Elle. She couldn't knowingly allow the girl to walk blindly into that abusive relationship with Campbell. The very least Penelope could do was subtly warn her, she just hoped it wasn't already too late.
Nell drops Harry's hand and steps towards Elle but someone blocks her way before she can get too far. "Penelope, what are you doing here?"
Will stares down at her with a frown and Penelope can feel her irritation towards him quickly bubbling towards the surface. "I'm here to work Will, I'm scheduled for kitchen duty just like everyone else here," she mutters through her teeth.
Harry stops a few steps away and turns back to her as the exchange begins, silently asking if she needs him to stay. Nell rolls her eyes at him but ushers him away with a flick of her wrist, the brunette grins as he leaves her to start his own work.
"Come on, Penelope. Didn't anyone tell you that you're excused from work? You were literally shot a few days ago," Will insists. Penelope tilts her head up at him curiously, maybe he was genuinely concerned about her wellbeing. Had she misjudged him?
"Gordie may have mentioned it, but it doesn't matter. I've had my meds and I feel fine, I'm ready to work, Will."
"Penelope you need to rest. You and I both know that you need to heal in more ways than just physically," he sighs, crossing his arms.
