James eventually gave up on constantly pursuing Lily and decided to give her space, also deciding that leaving Severus alone was his best chance and although it surprised everyone including James and Lily themselves (except Remus of course), Lily asked him out, finally admitting her feelings for her fellow Gryffindor.
