(Y/N)'s POV

"I can help the next guest!" I called sweetly. A teen dressed in dark attire stepped up to the counter. "What can I get for you today?"

"I'll have a medium triple shot french vanilla." He ordered. He sounded tired. Granted, it was 8:45 in the morning on a Saturday, so I didn't blame him.

"Is that all for today?"

"Yeah, it- no, actually, I'll take a bagel with cream cheese, toasted, as well." He said, pulling his wallet out.

"Okay, that'll be $8.73. Can I have a name for your order?" I asked as I rang up what he wanted.

"Nico."

"Okay, thank you, Nico. Your order will be ready shortly." I smiled as I handed him his receipt. We made eye contact and my smile turned into a shy one. "Have a good day."

"You too." He smiled back at me, although his smile seemed a little... off.

"Next guest, please!" I called as he walked away.

Time skip to the next day

"I can help whoever's next in line!" I called. "Hello, what can I get for you today?"

"Triple shot french vanilla and a toasted bagel with cream cheese." He ordered.

That sounds vaguely familiar... I mean, popular order, but his voice... "And what size will that be?"

"Sorry, medium."

"And a name for the order?"

"Nico."

Okay, this has to be the same guy. "Oh, um your total is $8.73. Your order will be out shortly." He started to walk away, but I stopped him. "I'm sorry, and I know this isn't really my place to ask, but were you here yesterday? Just before 9?"

He looked startled, but answered anyway. "Y-Yeah, I was."

"Sorry, that was really random. Have a good day."

The next few days passed in a similar manner. He'd come in fairly early in the morning and order the same thing. The days turned into weeks and weeks into months and months into a year.

Every morning, sometime between 8:30 and 9, Nico would come in and order the same thing. By the second week, he didn't even have to order. He'd just place the exact change on the counter as I placed his order. Every transaction ended with me saying "Have a good day" and him replying "you too" with a smile. I could tell he didn't wear that smile often. Every morning, for a year straight, had the same event, around the same time.

Until one day. I was sitting in the backroom, taking my break. All morning, I had this... off  feeling. Like something wasn't quite right. I glanced at the time on my phone and shrugged, putting my apron back on and going back to work.

The feeling continued all day before I finally figured it out. That one boy who ordered a medium triple shot french vanilla and a toasted bagel with cream cheese. I hadn't seen him all day.

I felt worried. But then I thought, Why should you be? He's just a customer, not your boyfriend. But still, I worried about him. The next day, I rang each customer up, hoping the next one would be him.

But it never was. For two years. Not once did I see that messily-styled mop of black hair paired with a leather jacket and black jeans. Not once did anyone else come prepared with the exact change in their hands and place it on the counter. Not once did he show up for two years.

I kept my part-time job at that small coffee shop for another two years. That brings us to now, current day.

My alarm blared off my phone at 5:30 as normal. I blindly grabbed it and turned it off, flinging the warm covers off my body. My bare feet hit the floor and I grabbed the necessary work clothes for after my shower. I let the hot water cascade over me for as long as possible before stepping out and drying off. I got ready and grabbed an easy breakfast on my way out the door. I arrived to work at 6:20, 10 minutes early for my shift. I pulled on my apron and did the normal prep for the day, greeting my two co-workers as they arrived. I unlocked the doors at 6:30 sharp and went behind the counter.

The morning rush hour passed quickly and died down soon after 7:45. As business slowed, I sat off to the side and scrolled through my Instagram feed. A bell above the door alerted me to someone entering the shop, causing me to shove my phone into my pocket and walk to the counter.

I smiled that fake smile that cashiers use. "Hi, what can I get-" I paused, my eyes going wide. "Medium triple shot french vanilla and a toasted bagel with cream cheese," I stated.

"Uh-um, yeah. Uh, how did you know?" He asked, the confusion written all over his face.

"It's you! You-you ordered the same thing for a year straight, like two years ago!" A real smile spread across my features. "Total is-"

"8 dollars and 73 cents." We finished together.

"You still remember my order? How?" He asked as he set the change down.

"Uh, umm... I may or may not have thought about it every day. Wow, that sounds really weird. Basically, I figured if you liked it so much to order it every day, it must be pretty good, so I started ordering it too." I blushed. "That's not weird at all..." I said sheepishly, rubbing the back of my neck.

"So I come back after, what, two years? and you not only remember my order, but you stole it and use it every day as well?" He laughed, an amused smile taking over his face.

"Umm... yeah?" He laughed again, but it seemed like there was something under the surface. Pain, maybe? "Um, I know it's not really my place to ask, but where have you been? I-I'm sorry if that's too personal, but..."

"No, it's totally okay. But if you want the truth, you're gonna have to believe some pretty wild stuff."

I told my co-workers I was taking my break now, and made myself the same coffee that he had just ordered. We sat down in a corner booth and he started talking.
