How did I come to be here today?
I came to be here because I touched my face
in the mirror once
And realized it was yellow
a sick and broken yellow,
Spurred through my pores by my
twisted back
and my fading eyes
A weight was nestled on my
eyelashes
and my future was trembling
breathlessly
between my fingers.

So I peeled my sandals off swollen feet
and shrugged the horizon off my
aching shoulders

and I watched as it plummeted
down, down
Marveling at how heavy it must
have been.

Now I am here,
restored,
with gold dancing about me
And nothing remains of
the burden
but a smattering of scars
across my weary shoulders.
