Silence

sometimes I think about how vastly different
things might be
had I not said what I did.
you were only asking a question,
but the trouble is that
I responded as if it were
only a question
when in truth it was
far more.
if, perhaps,
I had considered what you may have meant to
say
and what you may have wanted to
say
rather than merely what you did
say,
my answer wouldn't have been followed
by such a silence from
you
which was in turn was followed
by many decrepit years
of silence,
each of which sickeningly resembled the
first
silence
in which you mulled over my answer
until there was nothing
left
but
acutely
sorrowful
silence.
