Richie spends so much of his childhood blatantly pigtail pulling because he thinks Eddie is cute and as an adult Richie puts a lot of stock into keeping immature tendencies under control so when he comes back to Derry, he probably had the dawning realisation that he teased Eddie the most because he had a crush on him (and the memory of the teenage werewolf- metaphor for his bisexuality-(And/or the feelings he has for Eddie) is what led to his freak out in the hotel room and when mike calls.
Whereas Eddie's feelings were more of a slow burn- he clearly liked Eddie as a kid. However, adult Eddie thinks of Richie SO often.
Child Eddie says he hates the nicknames, most notably 'Ed's' yet adult Eddie says he secretly did like the nicknames and then goes on to say that Richie giving him the names provided him a whole new truer and freer identity for him to inhabit.
