Kefalonia, a true green island surrounded by the Ionian Sea's clear blue waters; yet an island of mystery and strange phenomena. The sea waters fade out under Argostoli, the island's capital, in the so-called Catabothres, and end in the atmospheric cave of Melissani, where the lake's waters draw turquoise reflections on the cave's walls.

The myth says that on the 15thof August every year harmless snakes go to Panagia Church in Markopoulo and St.Gerasimos, the island's protector, sometimes awakes and visits the nearbyislands. Although the catastrophic earthquake of 1953that struck the island destroyed it almost entirely, Kefalonia revived from itsashes and became a major tourist attraction in Greece and the rest of the worldwithout losing its authentic character. Most of the beaches are intact andoffer enchanting scenery and a quiet atmosphere
