I looked at dad and he just seemed really stressed. 'Gerard, you married one crazy woman.', he said to himself in a sad tone.

I sighed and I slowly got in the kitchen.

'Dad.', I said and he quickly looked up. 'Brandon, your mom... I mean, Jen went to work, you can give me the car keys.', he said. 'I know, I just saw her leave... and... I saw you two having an argument.', I said and he sighed before patting a seat next to him.

I nodded before I walked over to sit next to him.

'I guess you're wondering, how could your father be so spineless? How could he let mom push him around like that?' 'Dad, I would never think something like that of you. Well, of course I have a few choice words for mom, but not you dad. You're not spineless, you just want everything to go smoothly in this house. Also it's not nice seeing who dominates who in the relationship, it's supposed to be a team effort. I'm just worried that this Gala dinner is destroying your marriage.', I said with a sad tone and he gave me a small smile. It wasn't necessarily a reassuring smile, it felt like he was hiding the pain in his heart.

'To be honest, I'm worried too son. However, you know Jen means well...' 'But that doesn't mean she has to treat you like a child. You both have a lot to offer in your marriage, you're the brains behind the business and she's the... well, uh...' 'The woman who knows how to network, bring in potential clients, and hosts Gala Dinners to prove her prowess with handling people and networking?', he asked and I nodded. 'Actually that is a good one. However, she shouldn't have to treat you like this, and she only does it because she wants to impress every other person besides her family.', I said and he sighed. 'I'm beginning to think that too. When I married your mom, it was because we were so in love with each other, we had really good times, and really bad ones, but we knew we'd make our relationship work, I knew she was the one for me. However, when we got married, our love shifted towards "other" matters. Brandon, I still love your mom, but I'm starting to wonder if she loves me back or if it's just an act.', he said with a sad tone.

I shook my head because he was wrong, mom still loved him, that I knew for sure.

'She clearly loves you, but she's more concerned about her reputation. I've been telling my friends this for a while, her reputation and the way her friends look at her are more important than the family. She's punishing me because I see through it... and of course my sexuality. However, she can still change her focus.', I said. 'How? She bit my head off for choosing the wrong venue.' 'Find her the right venue. Then have a talk with her about all of this, tell her the truth, that part of you feels unloved by her. Trust me, you may fix this by getting back in her good books. You did say your marriage can withstand everything. I actually believe you.', I said and he smiled.

'You still care don't you?', he asked and I quickly cleared my throat. 'You don't wanna admit it, and it's fine, I'll...' 'I still care dad. I just wish you and mom would love me for who I am. I like guys, why can't you two understand that?', I asked and he quickly cleared his throat. 'See, there you go again.', I said with a sad tone and he sighed. 'I can't Brandon, it's hard for me to accept that I have a son who loves men.', he said with a sad tone and I nodded slowly.

Well, it didn't matter if he couldn't accept me or not, right now these two needed to stop fighting.

'It's ok, just focus on finding the venue. In the meantime, here are my car keys. Enjoy that car and take care of her, she's taken me to very awesome places and I liked each road trip I took with her.', I said as I slowly handed him my car keys.

As he took them, he looked at me concerned.

'You really loved her.' 'It was the best birthday gift I've ever had.', I said as I nodded.
