Name: Akira Hotaru - meaning 'Light' and her family name meaning 'Firefly'.

Background:

Akira is from the Hotaru clan which breeds a special breed of firefly and hosts them in their bodies much like the Aburame and Kimizuru clan. The Hotaru clan had been wiped out by the Kimizuru clan when Akira was 5 years old and she was the lone survivor, hosting the only fireflies left from her clan and their entire species. She doesn't just use bug based jutsu however as she also uses Water and Wind jutsu's in battle which differ from the usual clansmen from bug breeding clans. She moves to the hidden leaf village after the Aburame clan find her when investigating the sight where the Hotaru clan once stood which was not burnt down. They find that she is the only remaining clan member and bring her back to the leaf where she doesn't talk to anyone after the trauma of watching her family burn alive. Akira and Shino end up befriending each other because they are both quiet and don't stand out much, to top it off, they both like bugs. Akira being the last known descendant of the Hotaru clan however is kept a secret because of the value of the Fireflies within her body and the price on her head from the Kimizuri clan. If it were found out that she had survived then she would be in danger so she is to only use her bug related jutsu's publicly when she officially becomes a ninja. 

Blurb:

Akira Hotaru, born in the Hotaru clan that breeds a rare kind of Firefly that feeds off the chakra of their host.

When returning from the hidden leaf village after visiting the Aburame clan, the five-year-old Akira and her family return home to their compound burnt to ashes at the hands of the Kimizuru clan.

With no home to return to and enemy ninja hunting them down, the survivors of the Hotaru clan are picked off one by one until only Akira remained, hosting within her body the only remaining fireflies of her clan.

After getting taken in by a passing couple from a village not too far away from her home compound, Akira learns her clans unique jutsu from scrolls left over from her clan. She is eventually found by Aburame clan ninja, who had come to investigate her clan compound, and brought to the hidden leaf for her own protection.

Suggestions:

How should I have Akira participate in the chunin exams? Should I put her in an existing team or perhaps team 8 with Shino himself, Make a new team just for her, or have her go it alone?

Since this is a Shino fanfiction and also includes the Kimizuru clan, the filler episode where Naruto and team 8 go to try and find a special beetle that tracks scents to track Sasuke's scent will have a big part.

If your wondering who the Kimizuru clan is then they're the bug user clan in the filler episode who use wasps/bees against Naruto and team 8.

Since Shino didn't participate in the mission to retrieve Sasuke when he did a Sasuke and ditched everyone for Orochimaru, we could have him go on a mission that has some significance to Akari and her clan or at least have her go with him.

Or perhaps she doesn't go on the mission with him and she goes to retrieve Sasuke with the others only to be save by Shino who could have returned from the mission early?
