the saddest pair

my own two eyes
look out for the saddest pair
the ones that speak when the mouth stays shut

they ask me "do i know you?"
i answered "you don't have to."

there is no explenation
for my fascination
with the sadness someone holds in their gaze

they said "please, don't hurt me."
i replied "no promises."

this is not about me
never will be
it's about the eyes that never leave

they explained "i forgot how to shine, got lost in the darkness."
i smiled "should i light myself on fire to find you?"

before they could react
i had to be direct
"you have to be careful, for when i burn, touching me will hurt."

- written when i didn't know how to speak
