Now then, usually self-awareness is used for comedy purposes. The most common one is making references to the author, but since most Wattpad stories are reader inserts, it makes up for an interesting paradox:

On top of all this, the 4th wall breaks can add into the cool factor and relatability of the MC. How? By talking with the author and/or saying himself how 'cool' and 'badass' he is. Hmm? Actions? What are you on about?
Forget about the importance of the timing or the context of the scene. Stick to jokes so dry even the one telling them is dying of dehydration, and you too can enjoy the feeling of:
