With a deep rumble, the great stone door heaved itself open, shaking the ground as it moved. Ezreal grinned, the door revealing the vast catacombs that lay beneath Shurima's sands. He didn't tarry long, and soon he was through the door and strutting along a raised walkway, gazing at the enormous hall he found himself in. Beneath the walkway lay a black abyss which may well have been bottomless. In the centre of the room stood a tall platform, a piercing blue light shining from a plinth in its centre.

"Score," thought Ezreal, recognizing the light as the artifact he had come to find. He eagerly climbed the stairs to the platform, his eyes falling upon the blue, crystalline tear. With a wry grin, he reached forward grasping the tear, pulling it from its plinth. However, as he did, he felt a rumble beneath him as the entire catacombs seemed to shift.

Around him, purple light erupted from the depths beneath the platform as hundreds if not thousands of purple creatures flooded onto the platform. Ezreal's eyes widened for just a moment before his legs pushed him back towards the exit. Before long he was sprinting at full pace down the stairs, taking them four at a time. To his dismay, more purple creatures, which resembled enormous insects, swarmed onto the path before him. Desperately he leapt into the air, feeling magic flowing from the Gauntlet of Ne'Zuk into his body. He closed his eyes, feeling his body shift and, as he opened his eyes, he landed with a less than elegant stumble, the purple bugs rushing at his heels. A desperate smile crept onto Ezreal's face as he saw the light of the exit, but that smile soon dropped into a look of despair as he saw the door closing. He lunged forward with all the strength his legs could muster, reaching for the closing door with the tips of his fingers, only a foot away then a few inches then a hair-

Thud.

The door closed, leaving Ezreal face down in the sand. "So this is it," thought Ezreal, "this is where I die."  As he pushed himself to his feet, he turned to face the tide of purple insects behind him. But, to his surprise, he saw instead a swarm of what looked like purple missiles streaking through the air towards him. Instinctively, he cradled his head in his hands, gritting his teeth as he awaited the impact.

Boom.

Ezreal opened his eyes, surprised when he saw his hands intact and unharmed before him. He looked up, his eyes widening in wonder. This was partly due to the scores of insects that lay dead around him, purple liquid oozing from every one of them. However, his dumbfounded expression was mainly due to the figure flying through the air towards him. Clad in similarly purple armour, at first glance the figure seemed like the purple insects. However, upon closer inspection, Ezreal decided they weren't hostile, at least to him anyway. As the figure landed, Ezreal blushed a little as he noticed the curves of the figure, who he decided was definitely female. His suspicion was confirmed when the figure's mask dissolved into the air, revealing the face of a young woman who, by Ezreal's guess, looked somewhere in her twenties.

Her lips were purple, and they frowned as she nodded for him to run. Ezreal noticed that the missiles which he presumed she had fired had blown open the door and the fresh air was seconds away from him. Before he could say anything, she turned away, leaping high into the air, several barrages of missiles streaking from the cannons floating over her shoulders. The wave of purple insects was quickly decimated and Ezreal turned towards the exit, deciding she had the situation under control. However, something stirred within him as he stepped towards the sunlight beaming through the doorway.

He glanced back over his shoulder, watching as the woman fought off what must have been thousands of insects. He couldn't just leave, not after she saved his life. His thoughts were interrupted when an insect leapt onto her, its purple claws clutching her sides. Without hesitation, Ezreal threw the artifact to the ground, feeling magic rushing from the gauntlet of Ne'Zuk. An ethereal bow formed around the ancient gauntlet and he pulled its string back, releasing a blast of arcane energy. The shot hit its mark, obliterating the purple creature. The woman turned to him, surprised at his sudden courage. Instinctively, Ezreal smirked, nodding his head as though he was flirting with an upper-class woman in a high-society piltovan bar. The woman didn't remain stunned for long and soon she was back to blasting insects. "No time for flirting," Ezreal thought to himself before leaping forward, sending another blast of arcane energy streaking through the air towards the purple horde before him.

Kai'sa relentlessly fired barrage after barrage of void missiles from her floating cannons and the palms of her hands, obliterating the voidlings one by one. To his credit, the explorer she had rescued was pulling his weight, firing what seemed to be magic missiles and blinking through the air with some kind of short-range teleportation. She noticed the wry smile that sat on his lips as he blasted voidlings with his gauntlet and couldn't help but smile a little herself. She wasn't sure exactly how long they were fighting for but, eventually, it seemed the catacombs had no more voidlings to give. With a sigh, she blasted a ball of purple plasma at the last remaining voidling and turned to face the explorer. The same wry smile from before remained, as he turned to her too. "Wow, those bug-things sure put up one hell of a fight," he remarked and he wiped some purple goo from the sole of his boot.

"Yes, I suppose they did. I am Kai'Sa, do you have a name, explorer?" she asked, her tone perhaps a little more imposing than she had intended. He didn't seem to notice as he laughed, flicking his blonde hair to the side and proudly announcing,

"I am Ezreal, the prodigal explorer!"

Author's Note: Okay, to anyone waiting on more of "The Demon and the Shadow," don't worry, I haven't given up on Kayn and Akali, I'm just giving them a little rest for now. After watching the new "Warriors" cinematic I couldn't help but write something about Kai'Sa and Ezreal. So please stay tuned, and enjoy the ships. Thanks!
