With mind still half in dreamland, you walk to the kitchen where you know he will be. More than the need for food early in the morning after rigorous late night hours, his absence the past few days would have made him want to pamper you. You know him well-very well. You're not even sure if you've only lived together for a year or you've actually known each other for a lifetime now.
Mark has his back on you as he carefully tries to flip the pancake without using spatula. It is adoring how he tries to have fun, or act cool, while doing the chore. You can't see his face, but you know his lower lip will be caught between his teeth.
"I did it!" he tells himself when the pancake lands successfully.
This pushes you to hug him from behind so suddenly.
"Oomf-" Mark groans, but looks back to check what has happened to you-he knows it's you. "What's wrong?"
You shake your head, nuzzled on his back. How do you say you keep on falling for him every waking moment?
"You can sit on the counter. I'm almost done. If you're bored, you can unplug the lights outside. I keep on forgetting to take them down. It's January already."
"But I like them," you mumble against his shirt.
Mark laughs knowingly. "You're such a kid."
Scoffing at his teasing, you take your hands off him and do as asked.
You return in the kitchen with breakfast already served. Mark keeps standing from the other side of the counter, munching on his pancake while putting away unused ingredients.
"I'll clean that later. Come on, eat with me," you tell him even though you know his head will shake as he says, "No, let me do this. I hardly do anything for you."
Mark glares at you when you say the words in a duet. You put out your tongue before drinking your coffee.
"What time is the Christening again? Are we going to attend the actual ceremony or just go to the reception?"
"I don't know, Mark, when we have a kid, do you want them to just come for food or be there to witness that important moment of our lives?"
Mark smiles-a smile you haven't met yet. He stops his cleaning and leans against the counter with hands going to yours.
"What does your smile mean? Did I say something funny?"
"No," he rubs your hands together, "you just said we're going to have a kid."
You raise an eyebrow. "Did I?"
"Yes! You said 'when we have a kid'. It wasn't an 'if' but a 'when'. So tell me, when can we have a kid? Can we have one now?"
You scoff at the innocence of his face, as if he isn't suggesting to have sex at the very moment. But looking at the big picture, this moment is precious. You're talking about the possibility of having a family together. Not everyone has someone willing to build a future with them.
"Mark, I-"
His phone rings, and you close your eyes to curse who ruined the moment.
Mark giggles, knowing just how your temper has risen. You're a sucker for dramatic, romantic moments, and this kid just ruins it. He answers the call with a grin. "Oh, Yugyeom-ah! ... Later? For how long? ... Okay, I'll ask her first," Mark puts the phone away and faces you, "Yugyeom is asking if he can sleep over because his brother is out of town. He needs to at least know there are other people in the house. He gets slee paralysis."
You make a face. "And what if I say I don't want to?"
"I'll be very surprised."
You roll your eyes. Mark knows you adore the kid. "Yes, of course he can come."
"Yugyeom, you're good. We have to go somewhere until dinner, so maybe you can come a little after? ... What do you mean you have a spare key to our house?" Mark scoffs and look at you. "She gave it to you?"
You grin. Mark is not the one who babies Yugyeom most in this house.
"Okay, we'll see you later."
"So, the Christening later," you go back before Mark can complain. "Your ex-girlfriend will be there, right?"
"Which one?" he asks in fake innocence, making you scoff.
"Oh, I don't know. How many did you have again? Will it be hard to figure out?"
"Yes, because I don't even remember them anymore. I only know who I love right now."
Damn him and his way with words. "I'm serious, Mark. Holly will be there, and you know how I feel about her."
"You're jealous of her?"
"No. I am wary of her because I know how she broke up with you, and I hate her for that."
"I don't care about that anymore. I don't feel anything for her."
You sigh. "I know. It's just that, you know how your friends will always hate your ex more than you do, because they've seen how hurt you were about the breakup and they don't want that to ever happen to you again?"
"I don't think boys have that kind of thing. We're just cool with her."
"Well, I'm not. I'm a girl, and I'm your friend before anything else. I don't want to see that person who made you question your worth."
Mark reaches out to pat your head. "You're so cute. You're my bestfriend, do you know that?"
You nod. Because that's what you should be to the person you love. Treat them like your best friend, and respect them as your lover.
"Don't worry, you don't have to feel uncomfortable anywhere you go. I'll always be beside you to keep you safe and entertained. Forever and ever."
