Byname: 1. archaic, historical A secondary name for a person or thing; a person's surname. 2. archaic, historical A nickname. 3. U.K. dialectal, Scotland A pseudonym; nom-de-plume.

A name is an important thing. In tales of old, if a fae is given a name then are given your soul. A name represents your very being.

So changing your name would be changing your very being.

At least that was the hope.

Staring into the mirror, they hoped for nothing more than to become a new person as soon as possible.

But that still meant killing the old person.

In this case that meant signing a piece of paper officially changing their name.

It seemed like an insignificant end to the death of an old self, but it was the best they had in this century and this place.

They took a deep breath and signed the paper.

A new name. A new soul. A new them.
