It wasn't until Wednesday morning that I saw Jenna again, sitting at the back of our English classroom with the back of a pencil in her mouth and her eyes focused on her phone in front of her. I had sent her a text the night before, but she had never gotten back to me.

"Hey." I said as I slid into the seat next to her and propped my bag onto the floor under the desk.

"Morning." She grumbled, pencil still in mouth.

I was quiet for a few seconds as I thought of a way to make conversation.

"How's school been?" I asked her.

She took the pencil out of her mouth and put her phone down "It's been the best." She responded, her voice sounding sarcastically cheerful. I wasn't sure what to say to that, but before I could open my mouth Caden slid by our table and tossed a small note onto the desk in front of me.

I followed him with curious eyes, and I could feel Jenna's eyes burning into my side as I slid the note under my desk and folded it open.

Meet me by the bleachers during lunch.

My breath faltered as I read the words, and I quickly scrunched the note up and shoved it into my pocket. I could feel Jenna staring at me as I returned my hands back onto the desk, but I decided not to say anything despite her obvious curiosity. She'd have to give up this cold shoulder she was giving me if she was curious enough.

Jenna and I didn't talk for the rest of the class, and time seemed to move dreadfully fast as lunch approached and I could feel Caden's note burning in my front pocket. I had reread it at least twice during biology and once in math too. I mean, part of me was still contemplating whether I even wanted to go. He had made it perfectly clear last Saturday that him and I were over. Who did he think he was just barging into the classroom like that and telling me to meet him? Like I didn't have a life of my own? Like I didn't have friends to see, or people to talk to during lunch?

I mean, I didn't, at least not with Jenna avoiding me all week, but that was completely beside the point.

Regardless, I still found myself sitting on the bleachers two hours later, wrapped in my Capitola High sweatshirt with a pen and notebook in my hand. It was already twenty minutes into our lunch break, and Caden still hadn't shown his face. I was growing increasingly frustrated, thinking that he was about to stand me up.

I already had my backpack packed and was ready to leave when he finally showed up five minutes later.
