guillotine

a crown is the closest thing man can get to having a halo
though a crown does not promise a purity of heart
nor a uncorruptability of the soul

it is a thing said to be bestowed by god
but really a crown is a circle of metal
forged by thick, time-worn hands
scarred and blackened
and so very mortal

it is a lie we tell ourselves to justify
how we allow ourselves to be ruled
by those whose only qualification is the gruel of their blood

after all, there is a reason why kings and queens were loosed of their heads
