And they come to work,
ready to serve at their neat service stations.
Armed with compassion,
they roll up the sleeves,
and bend on their knees,
fearful and brave-hearted,
masked and uncharted,
to treat all those in need.
And we stay at home,
feeling disserved
by our righteous indignation.
Naked and with no makeup,
we pull up the quilt,
smoke up with no guilt,
fearful and defeated,
unmasked and mistreated
in our exaggerated need.
And they summon even more compassion
as we stock up more food,
resentment, impatience, self-pettiness, bad mood.
They grow tolerance and passion,
as we invest more and more
to regrow empty coffers and regain our allure.
We'd meet them every day
but we'd barely see them.
And these nurses, drivers, cashiers, and guards
are now our selfless saviors and benevolent gods.
