Chapter 23: Little Girl
"We do solemnly swear that we will faithfully execute the role of Penny's bestfriends and will, to the best of our abilities, keep Penny from ingesting intoxicating substances, perilous troubles she may cause for others, and keep her within our eyesight, or so help us, God."
Mother nodded approvingly towards June and Alleny as they placed their right hand back down.
Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. A presidential oath? Seriously?
I heard a chuckle next to me and I shot Audrey a frown. She smirked at me in return and turned back to the entertainment in front of us, ignoring my subtle glare. I could not believe this.
Here I was, resting my arms on top of my couch with Audrey and watching my friends try to convince my mother to let me come to their party. Usually I wouldn't mind their strange little antics, but Audrey was here and they were embarrassing me.
"And here's some lovely flowers, chocolate, and wine for your amazing hospitality and allowing Penny to have her first teenage party at my house, Mrs. Rosemary," Alleny dazzled with a charming, innocent smile while taking said gifts out of her jewelry covered backpack. She placed them on the kitchen counter. "Also, my parents said 'hi' to you."
"So did mine," June added. "By the way, is it just me or do you look younger?"
My mother snorted, "I already said that Penny can go, just make sure she gets home by ten and that she stays out of trouble." She paused and looked at two of them sternly, "And I mean it. Exactly ten, no later."
My friends saluted at her with a wide grin. "Of course, Ma'am!" they said in union. I rolled my eyes.
When they left, my mother gave me an accessing eye and smiled, "You know, I'm proud you didn't cause any trouble today."
"When do I ever?"
She quirked a brow and I blinked at her.
My mother turned her attention to Audrey. "Are you going to go to the party with Penny?"
I watched Audrey take a couple of seconds to reply, surprised on getting called on. "I, uh...I guess so."
A satisfied smile appeared on my mother's face. "Okay, good. Keep an eye on my little girl, will you?"
Good glob. Why was everyone trying to monitor me? I won't do anything bad. Seriously.
"Sure," Audrey nodded slowly. She briefly glimpsed at me with a puzzled expression and I shook my head with a sigh.
"So," Audrey began after we've seated ourselves on my bed, "Your mom and your friends seem pretty keen on keeping you on a leash."
I groaned and brought my knees up so I could rest my elbows on them and my hands on my face. "Limitation. Life is all about limitations. You've got a limited time to live, foods got a limited shelf-life, and even freedom has its limitations." I mumbled nonsensical words and flopped down on my back. "Can you believe that? Limited freedom? That's an oxymoron in its self!"
"Well, even with freedom, you can't just do whatever you want," and then she halted. "Hey, is it true that you used to hide dead birds under your bed?"
"Do you want to see my costume?"
"Are you trying to change the subject?"
"No."
Before she could say something, I jumped out of bed and began to rummage through my stuff underneath. While ignoring the disturbed look on Audrey's face, I found an empty glass bottle that I remembered her bringing to my room when she was drunk that one time, but I pushed it aside and grabbed my prized possession.
