Have you ever seen how a
Prince
pales in the shadow of a
knight?
I did, once.
How noble the knight,
burdened by purpose,
poised and
willing to ache,
that others might smile?
How courageous the knight,
seeing his own end,
goes forth without fear to woe.
For fate is nothing to cower from,
says he,
in his wisdom.
And so, Princes live on,
unblemished,
fair
perhaps handsome.
And yet pale, lifeless boys
who wither in the shadow of men
who passed that they might
reign in comfort.
This is why fools wear
crowns,
and knights wear the
cold earth
on their bones.
