"Hey Kiku, do you remember last year when that you were being bullied by that one guy?"

Kiku, who was sitting next to me, looked at me and smiled.

"Hai, but you were there to herp me out ____-chan."

Kiku and I have been close friends ever since birth.  Our parents left us both at an orphanage so we kind of have been living together.  The first time we ever got to talk to the other kids, they all bullied him for being smaller than everyone else. But me, being known as one of the worst people around, kind of scared off all the bullies.  That was when we were young, but now we're older and able to fend for ourselves.  Kiku actually learned some fighting and how to use a katana, but I call it a sword.  I, on the other hand, actually just know how to fight like a gang member.  We are both still too young to go into the real world by ourselves so we are stuck in this orphanage, waiting to either be adopted or get older.

I look up at the night sky and laugh, a tear falling from my eye.  Kiku looks at me and frowns.

"Why are you crying _____-chan?"

Slowly I put my hand to my face to cover my tears. Still I laugh, the tears falling faster and faster.

"You know why Kiku, it's because you've been adopted and I'm going to be left here by myself."

"______-chan, don't feer sad.  I'rr come back one day and visit you."

"Yeah, I know but what am I going to do until then.  You're my best and only friend.  I'm... I'm going to miss you."

Kiku then crawled over to me and cupped my cheeks, wiping my tears with his tumb. He then smiles at me and a single tear falls from his own eyes.

"_____, if you cry, you'rr make me cry."

I couldn't take it anymore. I could no longer hold my tough girl act.  Suddenly I started to burst out in tears and cry aloud, wrapping my arms around his neck.  Normally if I try and hug him, he would push me away or dodge, but this time he just let me cry in his arms as he hugged me tightly.  I felt his warm tears fall onto my head as the two of us cried in the dark.  After an hour, we both controlled our tears.  I wiped the last tears out of my eyes as Kiku released me from his warm embrace.

"I guess we should sleep now.  It is kind of late."

"Hai. Good night."

I was about to leave his room when I felt his hand on my sleeve. Looking down I see him, a sad expression still on his face.

"Prease sreep here tonight, rike we used to when we were kids."

A faint smile appeared on my face as I sat back down.

"Ok, let's go to sleep."

I got into the other side of Kiku's bed and wrapped myself in the blankets, then I felt Kiku's arms wrap around me.  I could feel my heart race, but I didn't know why.  Then I moved closer to his embrace and fell asleep.

The next day, as planned, Kiku left with his new family.  I told myself that I wouldn't cry when he left, so I didn't. He gave me one last hug then put a small container in my hand and closed it. Then I heard him whisper in my ear.

"Open this the next time we meet _____-chan. Good bye."

I nodded and hugged him back.  He then released the hug and left, leaving me to wave as he disappeared in the morning sun.

~Time Skip~

Many years have passed since that day, and now I am old enough to go out into this big world of ours.  Now I have a job as an actress.  Not one of those famous ones, just one of those people that you see in the backgrounds in movies.  Occasionally I would visit the orphanage, which is now shut down, and remember all the memories I had there.  The good memories and even the bad ones pop into my mind. I still have that small container that Kiku gave me before I left, but I still haven't opened it. Sometimes I would think about taking a peek at what might have been in there, but I didn't want to break that one last promise we made.
