Ranking Coronatus' Albums

Even though there's some stuff by them I didn't like, Coronatus are still probably one of my favorite symphonic metal bands out there, and that's because the stuff by them I did like. Of the nine albums they've put out so far, this is my ranking of them.

Because they have a different vocal-line up on every album (no one seems to stick with them for too long), I'm going to also add who sang on what album.

9. The Emience of Nature (2019)

Singers were Katharina Mann and Mareike Makosch.

This was their most recent album and my least favorite. It was just very dull, and I couldn't find anything too enjoyable about it. I did really like the song "Echo of Souls" but that was pretty much it. Neither Katharina nor Mareike sound too good here, and their voices just don't seem to go well together.

8. Lux Noctis (2007)

Singers were Carmen R. Lorch and Viola Shuch.

Their first attempt was certainly not their best. I do like "Scream of the Butterfly", which I think is one of their best-known songs, but other than that I didn't really like any of the songs on this album. It wasn't done well at all, and Carmen and Viola did not sound good together. They made better ones as their career went on.

7. Secrets of Nature (2017)

Singers were Carmen R. Lorch, Mareike Makosch and Gaby Koss.

This was actually the first album I heard by Coronatus, and it made me interested in hearing more of their music. It is pretty good, but to me it's boring compared to some previous albums. Sadly, this was Carmen Lorch's last album with the group (she left last year), and I kind of wish it could have been something a little better.

6. Fabula Magna (2009)

Singers were Carmen R. Lorch and Lisa Lasch.

This is one that I actually did enjoy. All the songs were good, and Carmen and Lisa sound great together. I think it's a shame that Lisa only stuck around for one album, but at least we have this one. The only reason this one is in the spot it's on is because there are others I like better.

5. Cantus Lucidius (2014)

Singers were Carmen R. Lorch and Anny Maleyes.

Cantus Lucidius was the first of two albums with Carmen and Anny performing vocals together, and I personally think this was the best vocal line-up the band ever had. "Schnee und Rosen" and "Cathy's Floor" are both among my favorite Coronatus songs, and "Elvenwell (I Can Give You)" and "Autumn Child (In My Dreams)" are also great tracks. If you're interested in listening to the band, this album would probably be a good place to start in getting introduced to their music.

4. Terra Incognita (2011)

Singers were Ada Fletchner and Mareike Makosch.

This was the only album the band released without Carmen Lorch before The Emience of Nature (she left in 2010 but returned in 2013), and I love her singing, so I wasn't sure what to expect from this album. But Ada and Mareike surprised me by sounding wonderful together, and I think this was the second-best vocal line-up Coronatus had after Carmen and Anny. This wasn't the most group of songs they've written, but the vocals made it all sound even better. Not their best album, but certainly one of the better ones.

3. Porta Obscura (2008)

Singers were Carmen R. Lorch and Ada Fletchner.

I love this album. It wasn't one of my favorites at first, but I've come to appreciate it more. I don't think Carmen and Ada's voices blended together particularly well, but there are some good songs on this album. "Beauty in Black", "In Your Hands" and "Mein Herz" are all favorites of mine. If you would want to listen to their albums in the order they were released, I would skip Lux Noctis and go straight to this one instead.

2. Recreatio Carminis (2013)

Singers were Carmen R. Lorch, Ada Fletchner and Mareike Makosch.

This was the first time Coronatus had three singers on an album instead of the usual two. It worked, because Carmen, Ada and Mareike made a great trio, and I don't think there was one bad song on the album. I wish this trio had lasted for more than one album, but I'm glad we did get Recreatio Carminis out of it.

1. Raben im Herz (2015)

Singers were Carmen R. Lorch and Anny Maleyes.

This was the second of two albums with Carmen and Anny as the vocalists, and this is the album I believe to be their best. "Lady of the Wall" is my absolute favorite Coronatus song; it was just unlike anything they had put out before that. There's just something so beautiful and so majestic about this album that puts it above all the others for me.

Coronatus are very predictable with their album releases; they put a new one out every years or every two years. So, they'll either surprise us with a new album later this year or it'll be out next year. I just hope it'll be something good.
