Song: Disease - Beartooth

10 – Obi

I look up from my spot perched in one of Master's office windows as the door opens and Lillith walks in. I'm not sure why, but I had been summoned this morning and not too long ago I was sent to give a message to One since she was closest to summon Lillith. Lillith bows to Master before asking what she can do for him. Her eyes drift over to me for a second but she makes herself refocus on him.

"Now that you both are here, Obi, Lillith, I have a job for both of you. I have been invited to the castle of a prince on the far border north of Tanbarun. Our kingdoms have never allied and we are hoping to come to a peaceful agreement. I need you both as additional security measures."

Lillith's eyes widen as she takes in the information. "B-But Sir I'm just an archer guard, I'm only really good at long distance fighting and-"

Master holds up a hand to silence her and her protests stop. "That's exactly why I need you there. The other Points as you call yourselves are great marksmen, sure, but you're the best and the one who is better at stealth. Mitsuhide and Kiki will be by my side for direct defense but you and Obi will not be known. I need you both to stay hidden but able to defend at a moment's notice."

"I-uh, yes Sir. When are we leaving?"

"Two hours. That should give you time to prepare to leave. You're both dismissed."

I stifle a laugh as I walk beside Lillith back to the servant's quarters. She's been rambling nonstop about how Master has made the worst mistake possible by insisting she comes along. She must really doubt her abilities. I won against her in the fight last night but she did better than I expected considering her career doesn't typically call for face to face combat. I haven't seen her in action with her bow beyond sending a couple of notes the other day so I can't say anything about that. Master considers her the best though and that should be enough for her.

"Hey, it's going to be fine. There's a decent chance we won't even be needed but if we are, all you have to do is aim and shoot and it's taken care of."

"I've never really had to act as a possible assassin though. Any battle I'd been in, it was an assault from both sides so I wasn't the only one attacking."

"They'd be attacking too, otherwise you wouldn't be. You're overthinking it."

She sighs and shakes her head. "Oh, I should probably tell Garak that I'm leaving otherwise she'd tear the castle apart looking for me."

We change directions and head toward the medical buildings.

Lillith and I escape Garak a short while later leaving Lillith to sigh dramatically as she trudges along beside me. Despite saying that it was an assignment from Master, Garak took it as Lillith and I going off on our honeymoon because one of us won the bet and we decided to marry. It was the strangest misinterpretation I've ever heard. I leave Lillith at her room so I can gather some things from mine. We'll still have roughly an hour left until we have to leave. Her door is open when I return and I stop in the doorway, the words dying on my lips as I find her staring down at a piece of paper with tear-filled eyes. She sighs and sniffles before folding it up and placing it beneath her pillow.

"Are you okay?" I ask finally and she turns her head so I can't see her face before nodding.

"Yeah, sorry. I just- it's a picture my oldest sister drew of our family and they've all been on my mind lately."

"I'm sorry I brought them up, I didn't realize that it would bother you."

"Do you have family, Obi?" She asks as she looks up at me finally.

"Just a sister, Daliah, but I'm not sure where she is anymore."

"What happened?"

"I had to leave when I was young and I left her in the care of an elderly couple but they passed on only a couple of years later and no one saw or heard from her since. We aren't sure if she wandered off or was taken."

"That's terrible. I think she's safe somewhere out there." She smiles softly.

"I hope so, but she had unusual features so like Miss Shirayuki, she had to keep herself hidden. I worry someone took her and sold her off."

"What did she look like?"

"She had almost burnt orange hair, kind of like the darkest orange of a fire. Her eyes were just like mine."

She arches a brow before dissolving into giggles.

"I-I'm sorry, I just- all I can picture is a copy of you with her hair instead."

"Rude." I grumble as I lightly push her.

"Hey! That's my line. This is my story remember?"

"I'm pretty sure this part is mine." I shoot back.

She opens her mouth to argue further but her stomach growls and she sighs.

"It's only been two hours since breakfast service, are you hungry again already?" I ask and she averts her gaze to the floor. "Or did you not eat breakfast again?"

"I overslept."

"We have... thirty minutes until we have to meet them at the gates. I'll make us something to eat."

"You cook?"

I don't answer her and instead lightly grab her wrist and pull her from the room.

I can feel Lillith's eyes tracking me as I move around the small kitchen set up in the servant's quarters. It's strange having someone watch me so closely, I suppose that's how my targets felt when I trailed them. I glance over and ask if she's okay when I find her staring intently at my hands. She jumps slightly and nods her head though her cheeks turn red.

"Are you sure? You seem a bit flustered." I smirk.

"I'm fine. I just- for someone who fights for a living you work so gently with your hands."

"There has to be a balance in life." I explain as I place the apple slices in the skillet with cinnamon and brown sugar then grab another skillet. "No one should live their life too softly but not too harshly either."
