Song: An Ever-Growing Wonder - We Came As Romans
27 – Lillith
As Obi leaves, I turn my attention to Tiean. It's his fault I had to overwork my arm because he abandoned his post to chase kitchen staff. I voice that to him but he ignores me to nudge at Len's body with his boot. I get to my feet and shove him away from his body and he laughs.
"You're so bitchy, it's no wonder that Obi guy went after Naela instead."
"Shut the fu-" I launch myself at him but he quickly catches me around the waist and spins me so my back is against his chest.
Before I can react, there's a dagger pressing against my throat. I look up to find Obi staring at us with a dagger in his hand.
"Put it away unless you want her throat slit."
"What's going on?" He asks as he complies and lifts his hands.
"Take me to Prince Zen and Prince Raji."
"There are far easier ways to see the princes besides taking me hostage you idiot." I grumble as I elbow him in the ribs.
"Lillith, he's not one of ours."
"Then can I have the honor of killing him?"
"Shut up and walk Blondie."
"Oh kiss my ass."
"Lillith-"
"Yeah, yeah, I know."
We very uncomfortably make it to the throne room where Prince Zen and the others are talking war strategies. I'm sure this may throw off their planning. As soon as everyone notices us and my new neck accessory Kiki, Prince Zen, and Mitsuhide draw their swords. Tiean's grip tightens and I feel the blade nick my skin.
"Put them away or she dies."
He sounds confident for someone who doesn't seem to realize he is in a room with an ex-assassin, an archer who has been trained in assassination, two princes with fighting skills, and two knights. He's not leaving here alive. As long as he doesn't kill me, everything will be fine. Dying will put a damper on the whole 'surviving the war' thing. But wait... Tiean was legitimately sent through our training to become a knight and was joining the Points before the war was even declared.
"Hey Tiean, how long has Covan been planning to try to take down Prince Zen? Training takes... six months before graduating, then it's usually a month before you're placed or sent for additional training." I ask and wince as he jerks on a handful of my hair.
"It seems Covan is rather dumb, you as well. If you wanted to assassinate Master there are far easier ways than infiltrating the ranks like that. Poison..." Obi joins in and I smirk.
"Breaking in..."
"Really anything could have been easier."
"Shut up! Both of you!"
"You haven't even given your demands yet. Seems like really poor planning there, Tiean."
"If this is any indication of Covan's ability then we have no worries about this war." I chuckle.
"You aren't making it out of here Tiean. You have some of the most highly trained fighters Clarines and Tanbarun have to offer right in this room."
"That's the point. Now, to make this even sweeter, I'll let you all watch your favorite pet die first."
My eyes widen as I feel the blade start to dig into my throat followed by a small spray of blood hitting my face. That's not my blood, so what's happening? Tiean's grip on me relaxes and as I'm knocked to the floor I crash into someone's chest.
"Hey it's okay, it's okay just stay calm. We'll get you fixed up and everything will be okay."
"Obi? What are you talking about?"
He doesn't answer me but he lays me on the floor and pulls his shirt off before pressing it to my throat.
"Obi, what's happening?"
"Y- He slit your throat. It doesn't appear to have been deep enough to hit your arteries but you are bleeding."
"Tiean?"
"Dagger through the eye."
"Obi, what did he mean by 'that's the point'?"
"I don't know but we need to get you to Shirayuki."
"There's a problem with that." I sigh as I glance toward the doors. "They're on fire."
Apparently Tiean wasn't the only part of Covan's forces on the grounds. We've been barricaded in the throne room and it's been set on fire. This is great, fantastic even. I'm bleeding on the floor with a dead man nearby, in a room full of people I care about or tolerate, in Raji's case, and I'm about to be burned alive. To make it even worse, it feels nice being held by Obi even though we aren't talking anymore.
"O-Obi, I'm sorry I froze you out."
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you what happened, but I promise I didn't kiss her. She came onto me and I told her to leave but she kissed me instead. I don't care about Naela, everything I said to you was true. I only want you."
"What?" I ask dumbly as my brain tries to process it.
"I never kissed her. I've been trying to explain but I didn't want to push you and only make you hate me more."
"As touching and confusing as this all is, I think we have bigger problems right now." I cough as the smell of smoke chokes me up. "Prince Raji, how thick are the windows?"
"Lillith, you're bleeding, you don't need to-"
I shoot Obi a look before ripping off the bottom portion of my tunic and tying it snugly around my neck.
"There, all fixed. Windows?"
"Three panes... We wanted to deter invaders."
"Smart but it doesn't help us any. Any secret ways out?"
"If there are, I don't know about them. I'm sorry I can't be more help my dear sweet Lillypad."
"Lillypad?" Prince Zen muses and I sigh.
"Everyone, stay low for the smoke and try to find any way out possible. Obi, you and I will take the rafters. There has to be an exit."
